Chapter 10: Hogsmeade

*Draco's POV*

So it was November, and Merielle and I are still great friends. She was still dating that Hollister brat, though. I was exiting Charms class when Pansy and Blaise came up to me.

"What do you want?" I asked. Pansy had that eager look on her face that always meant trouble, and Blaise was smirking.

"So how's the bet going?" Oh, so that was why they were here. To be honest, I'd forgotten about that.

"Uh, good," I answered, "Why?"

"We were just curious. I mean, you're only friends, and she's still going out with Hollister," said Pansy.

"Huh," was the only response I could give.

"Dude, you need to get a move on," Blaise said, and I scowled.

"In case you brainless people have forgotten, we're only in November. I have plenty of time. Now stop bothering me. I have DADA to get to." I pushed past them, annoyed. When I entered the classroom, Merielle was already seated, and she was talking animatedly to Potter. Ugh. Potty Pottah. She doesn't even notice I had come in. Then Snape strode in, and the whole class fell silent.

"Today we will be continuing with non verbal spells. Many of you seem to be pointless. And don't think I have not seen plenty of you cheat in some way or another. Nevertheless, there are some in this class that may manage. Malfoy, Stargline, come up." The class watched with interest as the Slytherin and the Gryffindor walked up to the front.

"Face each other, five metres apart," instructed Snape, "Now, Mr Malfoy will attempt to non-verbally jinx Miss Stargline, who will attempt to repel, also non-verbally. Then you switch roles. Demonstrate." We gripped our wands tightly. I didn't want to really hurt her, but it had to look pretty convincing. In the end, I opted for:
Impedimenta, I firmly thought in my mind, my wand directed at her. However, she was quicker than I anticipated and blocked it with a shield charm.

"Good," said Snape reluctantly.

*Merielle's POV*

Hah, take that Draco, I thought as I blocked his spell, which I guessed was Impedimenta. I saw him prepare to defend himself as I ran through a list of possible spells in my mind. Ah, got one. I raised my wand at him, and he visibly tensed. But then I confused him by waiting. Taking advantage, I immediately cast the spell silently. A streak of red emitted from my wand and shot towards him. He saw it, and sent a countercurse, but he wasn't fast enough. He flew across the room and hit the floor, immobilized, and his spell clashed with mine, sending a bang resonating throughout the classroom. I had used the one and only Stunning Spell, by far my favourite of them all. The Gryffindors applauded, whilst the Slytherins sulked and went over to Draco. Snape revived him, and I offered my hand to help him up. He hesitated, then took it and I pulled him to his feet.

"Rule number one: never let your focus stray from your opponent," I smirked at him, "and don't underestimate Merielle Stargline."

"You know, I could've easily blocked that. I just let you win," defended Draco smugly, and I laughed.

"Yeah, yeah. Dream on, Draco. Maybe you'll do better next time." The rest of the time left was dedicated to practising casting spells non-verbally. I had already been trained by my aunt, brother and parents in many aspects, non-verbal spells included, so it was quite easy. I assumed that Draco had also been taught because he was quite good. He only lost because I was better. I smiled, then went back to defending myself from Hermione, who was quickly getting the hang of it.
