Chapter 23: Truth and Lies
The next day was windy, and grey clouds gathered in the sky. I took a walk outside to clear my thoughts. That was when I saw her. She was walking alone, the wind whipping up those gorgeous ringlets of hers that I loved to tangle my fingers in. Her head was down, and she was aimlessly walking around. I took a deep breath before making my way over to her. This was my best shot at talking to her. My heart was beating nervously as I shoved my hands into my pockets.
She leapt back upon seeing me.
"Er, hi," I said. She scanned me.
"So you know what you did, do you?" Her voice was harsh and bitter.
"Yeah, I do, and I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. I know it doesn't fix anything but I really didn't mean to do it, I swear. I was just so, so stressed and she was there and...I don't know what came over me. I know it was wrong, particularly since we were together," I blurted out quickly. There was a deathly silence as she stared me down.
"What did you say?" she said quietly, "Who's this 'she'? What did you do?" I blinked in surprise.
"I -I thought-"
"WHAT DID YOU DO, DRACO? ANSWER ME!" she screamed, her voice ripped by the wind. I stumbled backwards.
"I thought you knew," I said gloomily, "I thought that was what Pansy told you."
"Oh Parkinson most certainly did tell me something, but I didn't know that you CHEATED ON ME! What. Is. Her. Name," she hissed, and I gulped.
"Imogen Eastside."
"Imogen Eastside," she repeated, testing the words. Then she snapped. "How could you fucking do this to me? Was any of our relationship real? Did you have fun using me, Draco?"
"Of course not! I wasn't-"
"Oh save it," she snarled, "I can't believe I ever trusted you. I thought you were someone decent. And it turned out that it was a bet all along! What was your next step, Draco, find a way to drop me in the dirt the hardest?" I felt my blood freeze over. So that was what Pansy told her. And all along I'd assumed-
Well, she knows the truth now, I thought bitterly. Merielle's cheeks were pink with anger, and her fists were clenched.
"What did you do with Eastside?" she sneered at me.
"I -we..." The words were lodged in my throat as I swallowed thickly.
"Fucked?" She raised an eyebrow, taking the answer from my silence. "Well, you can go and fuck her all you like. Go make her your girlfriend."
"What?" I couldn't believe her words.
"We're done, Draco," she seethed through gritted teeth, "I don't want anything to do with you."
"No -please..." I pleaded. She was everything to me. I couldn't lose her.
"How could you do this to me? I was faithful to you. I stayed by your side. I fixed you," she whispered.
"No, please don't do this. You're my only salvation." I was trembling.
"Then maybe you should have thought of that beforehand," she snarled, her voice thunderous, "You knew what I'd been through, what I was afraid of! Yet you went ahead and splintered my heart worse than any boy has ever done before. You smashed it to unfixable pieces, then discarded them onto the floor. You moulded yourself into what I was afraid of. You are my greatest fear, Draco." Those words sliced right through my heart, shredding it.
"No..." I whispered brokenly.
"I fell," she continued in a quiet voice, "I fell hard for you. It was you. Always you. I was falling, and you didn't catch me."
And with that, she walked away. I sank down onto the grass, my heart bleeding out, forming a pool of crimson red around me. The pain was a hundred times worse than the cruciatus. My world came crashing down, roaring past my ears. She had been the only thing keeping me upright. Keeping me on this world. Now she was gone, and I shattered. There was nothing left.
The heavens opened, and a torrent of rain poured down, flooding the world with my tears. The clouds of darkness shrouded my world again.
The worst kind of pain is being hurt by the person you explained your pain to.
Just ask Merielle or Draco.
