Chapter 36: True Friendship

The office looked like it had been ransacked, then tidied away and thoroughly thrifted through.

"Accio contraption." she murmured, but nothing happened. "Oh well, it was worth a try. Revelio." Still nothing. She sighed. The manual way then. Merielle lightly glided around the spacious office, running her fingers across the walls. When she found nothing, she began to inspect the filing cabinets, pulling open the drawers. Most of the files had been removed, probably for inspection.

"Hey! What are you doing in there?" She jumped, her heart beating madly as she spun around, her hand flying to her wand. A witch stood in the doorway, her wand pointed at her. Upon seeing her face, her expression shifted to one of mortification and fear.

"Oh! I am so, so sorry, Maynard...My sincerest apologies...I had no idea...." Merielle instantly realised that the person she was impersonating was an important and fearsome figure, and she immediately adapted to fit this new piece of information.

"Maybe next time check who it is before threatening them," she snapped in a cold voice, "I do not tolerate anyone being so disrespectful towards me. Perhaps you would learn some respect if I ruined your family, hmm?" The witch's eyes widened.

"No, no, please no...I am very sorry....Please..." Merielle struggled to keep her unforgiving look.

"Very well, but if something like this happens again, you won't be so lucky. I might just report to Yaxley, too. Now get out of my sight before I change my mind." The witch nodded and practically fled out of sight. Merielle felt quite sorry for the witch as she turned back around.

Upon realising that there was no sign of anything remotely close to the contraption, she moved on to her mother's office, feeling a kind of desperation rising up inside her. What if it was nowhere? What if the Death Eaters had already gotten hold of it? But she had ensured that nobody else could find it...what if her parents forgot to include her in the list of names that were granted access?

Merielle hastily searched her mother's office from head to bottom, looking in every corner. She was running out of time, she could sense that. She ran her fingers along the walls.

"Reveal yourself," she murmured, "I am Merielle Jennifer Stargline, daughter of Javier and Savannah Stargline. Reveal yourself. Please." As if on clue, the wall beneath her fingers shifted, and she held her breath, not daring to hope. The wall seemed to shimmer away as the familiar contraption came into view. Merielle gave a small laugh of relief.

"Passcode," she muttered, "Passcode...passcode..." Her eyes widened.

I leave my favourite mirror, in hopes it will reflect what she cares about most.

Merielle hastily pulled the mirror out of her bag, angling it towards the contraption, then peering into it. Something flickered in the corner, and she looked closer, making out the faint outline of a few words.

"Mirror...hiding....secret....contraption," she typed in. There was a smooth click, and she eagerly pressed her index finger onto the green light. It then scanned her face before there was a whirring sound, and then a virtual screen hovered in front of the contraption, forming a puzzle. She replayed the message from Dumbledore, and his intriguing words.

I leave my favourite mirror, in hopes it will reflect what she cares about most, and will show her life's every angle so that she may enjoy it.

It does one no good to dwell on the past. Live your life, Merielle. Enjoy it.

Merielle's eyes widened in recognition. She knew the answer. Hastily, her fingers moved swiftly across the screen as she keyed in the answers, and finished the puzzle. Her heart beat frantically. If someone decided to walk in right now...
