Chapter 43: Till our last breath

Their eyes widened as Merielle pulled it out of the contraption.

"No way," breathed Ron, transfixed.

"That's...but that's...Merlin's beard," gasped Hermione. Harry stared at it in awe.

"It's brilliant, but what's that?"

"Something that'll help us," grinned Merielle, her heart feeling lighter in days.

The four of them stood by Dobby's grave. The wind blew across their faces, and the waves rolled against the rocks. A simple stone marked the grave. It read:

'Here lies Dobby, a free elf'

Merielle brushed away a tear, her eyes blurred. Dobby had been a great friend. She had always loved the elf. And he had given his life for them. For the hope of a better, brighter future.

Just like so many others before him. The list would never end.

And Merielle let one stab of anger escape from the section of thoughts she had securely locked away at the back of her mind. How dare Draco stand on the dark side, just because he was too afraid. Too afraid to risk death, when so many people had so valiantly sacrificed themselves in the hope of a better, brighter future.

Just then, Luna appeared from behind them. She looked considerably healthier, with her blonde locks fresh and glossy, tumbling free down her back. Her skin had lost its pale shade, and she was not as thin as she had been before.

"The sky has lost a star," she said quietly, then explained, "My father used to say that when a child died." Harry eyed the travelling bag in her hand.

"Hogwarts?" She nodded.

"Luna, listen. It's not the place you left, you know. It's not the same," Harry said, and she nodded.

"Neither am I." Merielle stepped forwards and hugged her.

"We'll see you soon, Luna. Stay safe."

"I should be saying that to you four," Luna smiled, "Good luck." She gave a little wave, then Disapparated. Harry, Ron and Merielle turned around. Bellatrix Lestrange and Griphook, clutching the sword, emerged from the cottage.

"Bloody hell, that's a sight," Ron raised his eyebrows.

"Well, how do I look?" Hermione asked in Bellatrix's form.

"Hideous," Ron answered. Hermione cast Bellatrix's malevolent gaze upon him.

The group of them stood in a circle, then Disapparated away.

They emerged into a dark alleyway. Harry pulled out the Invisibility Cloak and threw it around him, Merielle and Griphook, effectively concealing them.

"C'mon," he said, "Let's do this."

Gringotts towered over them, white and imposing amongst the bleak greyness of the sky. Merielle had been to Gringotts before and it looked just the same. A vast chamber with goblins perched on stools behind counters. Hermione and Ron stepped up to the counter, where an aged goblin was scribbling in his ledger.
