You were sitting on the small table next to the motel kitchen, one of the new books in your hand that Dean had gotten you. He hadn't said a word ever since you got back from the mall and you weren't exactly a conversationist either. Whatever happened had really set you off, you found focusing on anything difficult ever since you had kissed him. Even being in the same room with him was sending chills down your spine. If his towering hadn't already made it clear before, he was sure to make it clear who had the upper hand here. What unnerved you even more on getting back was noticing that Sam and John weren't there, though how they got a car to travel in left you wondering.
Even now, you couldn't possibly guess what was going through Dean's mind. Was he mad at you? At himself? It was very difficult to understand him, especially when he didn't want to be understood. You had come to realize in the short amount of time that he was really good at suppressing his emotional expression and maintaining a demeanour. He was currently sitting on the couch, watching some car restoration show on the small motel TV.
The only thing that was making it possible for you to sit on your chair without crying your lyings out was the book in your hand. All of your past had trained you to zone out of your life, books were one of those few techniques that you had learnt. Mostly because they could easily be sneaked out of stores and could be found around unlike cable TV.
You heard a knock at the door and had just gotten up before Dean shut off the TV and walked to the door and signalled you to sit back down. He carefully opened the door, one hand behind his back holding a gun. He relaxed when he saw it was Sam and unlocked the chain to let him in.
"Had fun?" Dean asked in a mocking tone as he grabbed the bag of food from Sam's hand and brought it to the table, seating himself next to you. Sam took three beers from the fridge and sat took the last chair on the table.
"Only if. It was just a rumour which made its way to local newspapers and magazines. Even the cops were pulled into it for nothing." Sam sighed and took a chug from his bottle before looking at you. He immediately smiled, "Gone with the Wind, huh?" he asked, looking at the book in your hand.
"We got it from the mall." You replied with a smile. There was just something about Sam that made you forget everything and made you smile naturally. He had a characteristic charm and warmth, almost completely opposite to Dean. "Have you read it?"
"I got it from the school library in my senior year, had to return it in between because we were moving the next day." He said. "It seemed really good still.
"Should've just taken it with." Dean chimed in as he took the food out of the bags.
"Here." You put a bookmark for yourself and handed the book to him., ignoring Dean.
"Oh, no." Sam chuckled. "You can read it, I'll finish it after." He said and looked at Dean, immediately rolling his eyes. "God, Dean. Do you ever really think of anyone else?" He sighed and grabbed the burger and fries from the takeaway packet, handing it to you as Dean had already started eating.
"No, I'm serious. I haven't even gotten that far. You read it first." You said, trying to not pay attention to Dean who had just mumbled something inapprehensible through a mouth stuffed with food. As bothered he seemed before, he couldn't seem to care less now. It was like nothing had even happened.
"Really?" Sam arched a brow in surprise.
"Yeah, we got a couple more books. I'll just read something else."
"Alright." Sam smiled and took the book from you. "You look like you had a good day."
This time you did look at Dean, who still seemed unphased and more bothered by how quickly his burger was disappearing. You smiled and nodded.
