For You

The day had gone as worse as it could've been. You had tried your best and had maintained your composure throughout and it had actually been going alright, with John often nodding with approval, until after dinner. That's where it had all gone downhill. Everyone was having a drink and Dean had gotten into an argument with Wayne.

You were talking to Sam when it happened you didn't know. They seemed to be only arguing over something so nobody really paid much attention until Dean landed the first punch. From what you could see, Wayne had anything but expected it. He seemed surprised and didn't fight back when Dean got on top of him and landed a couple more punches to his face before John and Sam pulled him back.

Nobody knew what happened and there was clear tension there as Wayne had gotten up with a bloody nose and had left the room. John had said something into Dean's ear which had calmed him down and had taken over then and though everyone had passed it off as a friendly brawl which wasn't too uncommon with 'young men', it still couldn't undo what had been done. You didn't stay the night there and hit the road right away.

Nobody was in the mood to continue with the journey that night so John got two rooms at a motel about ten miles down the road. He took Dean away for a talk as Sam and you retired to your rooms after an awkward small talk. You really wanted to get to know Sam more. He seemed the only genuine soul in this family and your only possible ally in this situation but every time you two talked, Dean's warning rang in your ears.

You were afraid that you'd let something slip and Sam would find out about the true dynamics of your relationship with Dean which, though it seemed tempting, wouldn't be a good thing for you. Both John and Dean had clear anger issues and they were both far more unpredictable than your dad had been. If you wanted to even dare to hope of a future free of your dad or the Winchesters even, you had to get through this first. Everyone seemed to be playing their own game here. Sam stayed quiet even though you could see that there was visible tension between John and him. Dean had walls around him built so high, he was practically living a lie every time he was in front of John or Sam.

You knew it because you had seen his true self. That day near the lake where you two had kissed. He'd been genuine then. You liked to think that there was a true Dean Winchester under all these lies who wasn't as rough or emotionless. But again, there was no reason for you to think so either.

"You still up?" You started as the door opened suddenly and Dean walked in. He looked tired and there was a visible red mark on his face. You wished you had paid more attention to Dean after his fight with Wayne because you weren't sure if that mark was from Wayne or from John. John was abusive, you'd seen it first hand. But he seemed to act well enough with Sam and Dean. But again, there was no reason to think so either. You were still new here and you had a lot of things to figure out.

"Can't sleep," You said as you moved over on the couch to let Dean sit. He sat down with a heavy sigh and put his feet up on the coffee table. "What happened?" You asked. "With Wayne."

Dean scoffed and shook his head, "He's an asshole." He said and you waited for him to add something to it and just chuckled when he didn't.

"I know that," You said, making him look at you. "But what made you punch him?" You asked. "For a second, I thought you were going to kill him."

"I would've," Dean said without a pause and his tone made it clear that he had meant it.

"Oh." You said as the tone of the conversation suddenly grew darker. The hunters' community was pretty tight-knit but it could have its fair share of fights and sometimes, the fights could take a grim turn.

"He called you names," Dean said finally. "He crossed his line."

You furrowed your brows, "That's it?" You asked. Dean raised a brow at you in surprise. "You do know that's just how Wayne is, right?"

There was a brief moment of silence in the air as Dean looked at you as if still questioning if you were joking. "Well, that's not how I am. He said something about you and he got what he deserved." His voice had gotten deeper and lower. You could say that he was proud of it too, that he felt like he had done something good.

You had too many things to say to him for that but none of them felt like they wouldn't offend him. It made you feel like shit. That Dean had gotten into a fight for a stupid thing Wayne had said about you. If he was being an asshole about you, he could've come to you and said it. You could've dealt with it. Who was Dean to start landing punches?

"I'm sorry," Dean said finally. "I just..." He drew in a sharp breath. "Yeah, I'm sorry. I messed up."

And just like that, you had nothing to say to him. Hell, you didn't even have something to say to yourself. This was what was so frustrating. He'd be good one day and be yelling at you the other. He was just so incalculable that every time you thought to say something to him, you had to go over it in your mind at least twice and you felt like you were walking on eggshells with both Dean and John.

"You want coffee?" You asked to break the awkward silence and he nodded. You got up to go to the motel kitchen as you took out the essentials from your bag. Dean took off his boots and turned on the TV, flipping through the channels and you weren't really sure if he was even watching. You looked through the kitchen window at the dark sky and empty roads as you waited for the coffee to get ready. You could really just leave. You could wait for Dean to fall asleep and then just get away from all of this. So what if the Winchesters were good hunters? Hell, you could be an even better runaway. You could just disappear and-

You shook your head as the coffee got ready. You poured it into two cups and took them to the couch. Dean took the cups from your hand as you settled down and handed yours back to him. He moved closer to you and put his arm around your shoulders. "Here," He said, handing you the remote. You browsed through the channels just like he had and then decided on an American game show.

About an hour later, you were still watching TV but the show had ended and there was a repeat telecast of a drama being aired. "You want to head to bed?" Dean asked after a while and even though you weren't sleepy, you nodded. You turned off the TV as Dean stripped his clothes so was just wearing his T-shirt and boxers. When you laid down on the bed and Dean pulled you closer, his arms wrapped around your waist, you didn't push him away like you normally did.

At that moment, you could imagine it all being okay. That you and Dean were truly in love with each other and this wedding-to-be was a dream come true. You could forget all that John had said and realize how much better all of this was than your dad's home. You were still allowed so much and you were so privileged for it all.

But no matter what you told yourself, it always felt wrong. Even if you could feel yourself starting to like Dean, this whole situation still stung you nonetheless.

"Goodnight, Y/N," Dean whispered as he put a gentle kiss on your neck.

"Night, Dean." You said and laid there sleepless for hours, it seemed. You thought about many things but after a while, you found yourself creating scenarios and imagining places you'd never been in and would possibly never get to. Sleep took you after some time and you let it drown you. You were suddenly pulled out of your sleep when Dean spoke in a low voice.

"He's mad," Dean whispered. You were faced away from him so his chest was pressed to your back.

"Did he hit you?" You asked before you could think it over. Your own words woke you up more evidently. You could feel his body shift a little. He didn't answer for a while and maybe that was all the answer you needed.

"We might have the wedding early, he's thinking this month." He said later, "Be good, Y/N," He said but you couldn't focus on what he was saying. He said something else as he drifted off to sleep but you didn't pay attention. You were wide awake now, your mind running wild with possibilities. If John really was abusive and Dean hated him, you could get him to your side and finally find an escape from all of this.
