John's Word

You were familiar with the rustic effluvium of rotting wood of old houses but this one didn't look as bad as it smelled. It was big and looked like an actual family used to live here. It only lacked organisation and maintenance, but the house in itself was a good ol' country luxury.

You followed Dean inside and saw John talking to Bobby. Dean let go of your hand and greeted Bobby with open arms. While they hugged, you couldn't help but feel a little uncomfortable as John stared at you. You looked around to avoid his eyes when Bobby noticed you.

"Ah, you must be Y/N! Come here, boy!" He said and pulled you into a hug as well. It was a quick one but the timespan didn't make it any less uncomfortable. "Found yourself a good one, Dean. Eh?" He looked back at Dean and smirked. Dean chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck, his ears turning slightly pink. You narrowed your eyes, Dean didn't exactly look like someone who'd blush as he did. Nonetheless, he was good at hiding it.

"Care for a word, Y/N?" John stood up and patted your back, his hand resting there. You looked up at him and nodded as he took you upstairs while Dean and Bobby broke into their conversation. Dean eyed you as you left though. "Right this way, son." He lead you into a room and closed the door behind him.

The room, like the rest of the house, lacked maintenance and care. It ached you slightly to see the beautifully picked furniture in the room to have been forgotten. The house had memories it still held onto. The house deserved better. But again, so did you.

"Did my son hurt you?" John asked outright, making you turn to look at him. You were about to shake your head when he gave you an empathetic look. "I can tell red and swollen eyes from a normal pair, son. You don't have to lie." He said. "If he said or did anything that hurt you, you can tell me. I'll make sure he knows better from next time, you have to spend the rest of your lives together after all."

Your stomach churned at his words, making you sick. Spending the rest of your life together. You were surprised by your thoughts but you'd still rather be back in the car with your dad when you stayed alone locked in most of the days with no one to give two shits about you.

"It's not like that, sir." You said. "I..." You felt your breaths grow heavier and you sat down on a chair. "Did you really buy me?"

John's brows furrowed and he understood soon enough what all of this was about. He knew James, of course the man didn't tell you what he was throwing you into. He took a deep breath and sat on the bed in the room, facing you.

"Look, if you don't like Dean, I'll tell him to stay off for now." He said. "You won't have to deal with him. But trust me, you'll find it much better with us than James." He said.

"What do you mean stay off?" You looked at him.

"I'll tell him to not do anything until you're ready. You can take the time to get to know each other and get comfortable. But you see, the wedding has to take place." John said. "I'm sure you know by now that we've spent quite a lot on you," he said and quite frankly, it felt like a punch to your gut every time you thought about it. "And even so, many people already know about the wedding. It wouldn't be good in our family's name if the wedding was to be called off." He said. "But other than that, I'll make sure to give you whatever you want and need. I'll try my best to help you be comfortable, I just expect you to cooperate with me. Okay?"

You nodded, still taking in everything that he had said. "Can I go to college?" Was the first thing you asked. Having been home alone with a TV, you had seen kids going to college and being free. You had seen people have fun and make friends of their own choices, getting to study whatever they want to.

John chuckled a bit. It wasn't a bitter laugh but more like he genuinely found it amusing and took it as being naive. "You see, Y/N." He smiled almost apologetically at you. "We move around a lot. So it isn't really possible." He said. "But hey, if you and Dean ever want to move out and go out on your own, you can always ask him. If he's okay with it, sure you can."

You nodded, "I understand, sir." You hated it as the reality unfolded itself to you each passing second. Ask him, if he's okay with it. Where did that put you? Didn't you have any conscious of your own to act on now? So what, you were just a puppet and a show-off husband for Dean?

"Again, call me dad." He said and gave you a warm smile, something you weren't very used to. "Anything else?"

You thought for a moment and asked again, "Can I get new clothes? And books?"

John smiled, understanding how deprived you must've been under James's roof. He knew they couldn't exactly afford a lot of squandering around at the moment, but he couldn't say no to everything you said either. So he nodded, "Sure." He said. "I'll ask Dean to take you tomorrow."

You looked at him with a confused countenance when he spoke again, "I know I said you won't have to deal with Dean if you don't want to, but you have to at least give him a try. He's a good guy. Sure he has quite a bit of a temper but you should give him a shot. You're going to have to start acting like a grown-up now, yeah?" He said and stood up. "Is there anything else you want?" He asked and you shook your head. "Alright then, come on. Let's get going, it's getting dark outside." He said. You nodded and followed him downstairs.

John took Dean to the kitchen to talk when you stayed in the living room with Bobby. He wasn't exactly super chatty but he sure as hell asked you tons of questions. You could still see Dean's face as he talked to John though, and he looked mad. His eyes caught yours looking at him and he relaxed his expressions.

Once Dean and John got back, everybody said their goodbyes. Dean, you and John got back in the car. This time, John took the wheel while you got in the back and Dean took shotgun.

"You want to go to the mall tomorrow?" Dean turned to look at you. You could see John eyeing you through here rearview mirror as if to say he's keeping his eye on you, and you nodded. "Cool, I'll see if Sammy wants to tag along." He said.

You were confused at first. You hadn't heard that name before, "Your dog?" You asked. Sammy sure sounded like a name someone would give to their dog.

Dean laughed at that and so did John. "Sam's my younger son," John told you.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-"

"It's fine, son," John said. "He's been meaning to meet you, you'll see him when we get back." He said.

"He's nice, you'll love him," Dean said and gave you a warm smile you couldn't help but returning. You weren't exactly used to smiling at people nor were you used to people smiling at you, but you made a sure short effort and smiled slightly at him.

You could notice that Dean was deliberately trying to talk to you and made sincere efforts throughout the ride. Perhaps that was what John had talked to him about. Nonetheless, you were less uncomfortable with them now as you were earlier that day. But this comfort, this silence of your mind, it felt dangerous to you. As if a storm was on its way.
