"Good. Don't worry, I won't do anything until after the wedding though. Strict orders from dad." Dean said.
Your eyes widened, "Wedding?"
Dean looked weirdly at you, "Yeah. Our wedding." he said. He studied your perplexed physiognomy for a while before it hit him, "You don't know we're getting married?"
You only shook your head.
"Son of a- then why'd you let me kiss you back there?"
You looked at him and thought for a minute before answering, "I don't know." You said and you honestly really don't know. Your dad had specifically told you to do as The WInchesters said and that's all you knew. Looking back at it, the kiss really should've been the limit but you just don't know why you didn't react.
"Hey, we're going to be married. I need you to be honest with me." He said, putting his hand over yours over the table. "Y/N?" To him, you not saying anything to the kiss was nothing but confirmation that you were into him and even if you didn't know about the wedding, you would still want to be with him. Well that and how his life had basically trained him to think he couldn't ever get rejected.
"Here's your order." The waitress came over with the food and put it in front of you. Dean sighed and started eating his food and so did you. You kept your eyes on your plate. You wanted to eat but somehow you just didn't feel like eating anymore. So you took as much bites off it as you could to not seem rude and got up when Dean was done. He paid and you two walked out.
"Mr. Winchester?" You called as you two approached the car.
Dean turned around, slightly surprised. "It's just Dean." He said. He noticed you were troubled and instead of getting in the car, he stood in front of it with his back to the car. He crossed his arms, "What's up?" He asked.
You gulped and stood there awkwardly for a couple of seconds as you went through your head one last time on how to say it. Dean looked at you and he could see that you were still thinking so he didn't say anything and waited for your response. "Do we have to... I mean by any chance, is there a way for us to not get married?" You asked.
You looked up at Dean and boy did he look... pissed? Embarrassed? He looked like he had just been smacked across the face and it sent a shiver down your spine. You were about to apologise when he replied, "No, now get in. It's getting cold." Dean said and took off his jacket and put it around you before getting into the car and in the driver's seat. You cursed your dad for getting you into this shit and you figured you'd either have to make a run for it or somehow convince them to cancel the wedding. You had just gotten out that shitty hell hole of a life with your dad and now this? That's when it hit you, this was it. This was the price.
The rest of the drive was as silent as it could've been, with only the sound of wind searing through your ears. Dean had even turned off the music which made the situation altogether more awkward. You couldn't understand exactly. What was it? Dean barely even knew you, how could he be offended when a complete stranger didn't want to marry him? But again, you didn't know Dean either. He was good looking alright, so you turning him down could have just triggered an ego issue.
Just as you could see the cars lining up around Bobby's garage in the distance, Dean took an off-road turn and pulled over under a tree. You looked around and turned to Dean with a confused countenance.
"Did you mean it?" He asked. "Do you really not want to marry me?"
Oh, boy. "Mr. Wi- Dean... I don't even know you. I..." You were at a loss of words. You could list down a million reasons to why you didn't want to marry a complete stranger but you just had no idea what would offend him and what wouldn't.
"Look, I know you're young and you don't know a lot about me. But we can learn to walk forward, right? Together?" He asked, putting his hand over yours which rested in your thigh. It startled you a bit but you didn't pull back. "I understand what you mean, but I can't do anything about it even if I wanted to, you know." He said, clearly stating that he still definitely wanted to marry you."My dad paid quite a lot to your dad and I don't think he'll let you go that easy. I've been ordered to marry you just as you have been to me. And he's a great hunter, you can't run either. What will you do?"
You looked at him with raised brows and wide eyes, "What?" You asked, perplexed. "Your dad bought me? My dad sold me?" You blinked a few times and looked outside the window with a sarcastic chuckle as the gravity of the situation hit you: you weren't going to complete a time period of work and be let go. This was a forever thing. "God that's low. Even for him." You mumbled to yourself.
"What did he tell you?" Dean asked, giving your hand a squeeze. Although he wasn't liking how it started but he preferred you talking over the altogether silent you.
"That my dad owed your dad a lot and there was no other way but for your dad to take me to cut off all the debts." You said. "I thought I was going to be some kind of an assistant or something."
"Well, if it helps, your dad didn't completely lie about it." He said. "He was in a lot of debt, just none from my dad's. Your dad just needed money and he offered you for it. I was of age and your dad showed me your picture. I liked you so-"
"So you bought me." You chuckled, shaking your head. Dean could see a couple of tears brimming your waterlines. "Fucking unbelievable, the guy was going about trying to sell me off to strangers." You said.
It was a known tradition in the hunter business to marry within the community. As absurd as it was, the community was still riddled with the patriarchal paradigm. Even with same-sex relationships, there was bound to be a 'man' and a 'woman' in the relationship which made you sick. It was clear. Dean was the patriarch between the two and you could see how he had been brought up as one which explains the ego issues.
You didn't know a lot about the Winchester family but the situation was quickly dawning on you. As it was the norm in powerful hunter families, the men of the family had a right to choose their spouses which happened to be a lot younger than them. You remember how your family used to be rich and powerful in the community as well, right before your mom died. Your dad let the whole family name to ruins and lead you two in an perpetual state of bankruptcy. He gambled, drank and hardly ever took up any jobs. You couldn't blame it on him either. The love of his life just had just been taken away from him, but that didn't mean you weren't disappointed either.
Either way, you could see it now. Your dad must've paraded your pictures through a few powerful hunter families and the Winchesters might have just been the highest bidders.
You couldn't help but ponder over Dean's words. 'You can't run.' he had said. You weren't great at running away, your dad had caught you a couple times when you had tried to in the past. And the Winchesters were great hunters, so Dean said and so was it implied. There was no chance you were getting away and Dean picked you out of God knows how many other offers he might be gotten. He didn't look like he had a lot of money either, which meant his dad gave their last savings to your dad.
"Hey, hey." Dean scooted over to you as you broke down and tears fell down your face in unleashed torrents. "It's okay." He said. You wanted to push him away when he put his arms around you and pulled you in a hug but the look on his face came to your mind when you had told him you didn't want to marry him. You chose to focus on calming yourself down which you did soon enough and Dean pulled back. "Do you want to go somewhere else?" He asked.
You looked at him and shook your head, just not being able to know what to say. You hadn't exactly ever been given the freedom to choose where to go before. You sat back and wiped your face with the hem of your shirtsleeves, looking out of the window to avoid Dean's eyes.
Dean looked at you for a couple of minutes before sighing and hitting ignition. He drove to Bobby's place and parked the car. You got out of the car just as Dean did and followed him into the house. Dean took your hand in his and held it throughout.
