North DC City Hospital
Washington DC
April 2014Iola stared intensely through the glass as Doctor Fine and his assistants worked on Fury. She was joined by Steve, who held a sombre expression on his face. She found it hard to read him in times like this, and she guessed it was based off of the fact that he had seen so much death in his time, that it just doesn't faze him anymore.
Ever since Steve had seen how Iola reacted to Fury getting shot, he couldn't help but feel like he misjudged her. They didn't always get along, but he knew if it came down to it, she would save his life. He would save hers, but after the incident on the Lemurian Star, he didn't think that she thought the same.
It dawned on Steve that he had forgotten that she doesn't remember anything before S.H.I.E.L.D, that this was all she ever knew. That's why she was so sarcastic, and quick to respond. He would be the same if he could barely remember anything. He wouldn't know how he'd cope if he never knew Peggy or Bucky.
Bucky.
His heart hurt to think of him. It hurt to think that his best friend risked his life to save his own as a result of HYDRA. It was hard for him to imagine what he could have done differently, but that didn't mean he didn't blame himself for Bucky's death. He should have known that the mystery blonde girl with superhuman strength wouldn't go down so easy. He should have expected her to come back.
Steve was drawn away from his thoughts when Natasha walked into the room and joined both him and Iola staring through the glass at Fury's unconscious body.
"Tell me about the shooter."
It wasn't a question, more of a demand. Iola was first to speak.
"He's fast, strong. Had a metal arm."
Natasha stayed silent as Maria Hill stepped forward to the glass. She continued to explain the information they had gathered on the shooter. Her face was easy to read, she was heartbroken, stricken with worry. Iola couldn't help the feeling of sympathy wash over her. Fury and Hill were the first two people she grew close with when she has started training. So Iola could understand how Hill was feeling, the same as Natasha.
The only person who couldn't was Steve.
Iola couldn't help herself for partially blaming Steve for this, though she knew just as much as him that the shooter wouldn't have known where Fury was unless he followed Iola. That's why he disappeared. Not to spare her life, but to get what he really wanted.
A long static high-pitched drone pierced the silence. Iola's head snapped up. Doctor's crowded around nick, shouting to each other.
Iola watched as the doctors tried to resuscitate him, but to no avail. Her heart sank. He was gone.
She stepped away from the glass and left the room. Steve watched her go. He wanted to follow her, but he knew that he shouldn't and gave her the space she needed. He decided to stay with Natasha instead.
