Secure Bunker
Washington DC, USA
May 2014Steve stood with his back to the barred entrance, and stared ahead. They had just finished discussing the idea of swapping out the targets of Project Insight with different coded chips that needed to be secured in each helicarrier's data point.
He allowed the group to discuss between themselves the plan, but he knew the minute Fury tried to defend S.H.I.E.L.D, he would shut him down.
And he did. Everything would be destroyed, HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D alike. No more rats, no more protection.
As he studied the river running below him, he couldn't help but let his mind drift to Iola.
He had worked alongside her for a few years now since she landed on S.H.I.E.L.D's doorstep. Granted, they didn't always get along, but he still cared for her. But now he was left to question the icy blonde when he learnt of her past.
She had worked with both S.H.I.E.L.D and HYDRA, a double agent, despite her lack of knowledge. He didn't want to accept that she could have known all along, but he knew deep down that by her reaction at Camp Lehigh, she knew just as much as he did.
His mind drifted to the war, how heartbroken and defeated he felt when he learnt of the 107th's capture. How optimistic he felt once he returned the majority of the soldiers to Cornel Philips. How guilty he felt when he watched his best friend fall into the snowy depths of the German mountains.
It was her. Iola was there. He fought her with such hostility, but underestimated her capabilities. She showed resilience, determination, anger, as she walked towards him on that train. There was no fear in her eyes when she felt Bucky's hands wrap around her ankles, there was no panic when she fell with him as Steve watched from the carriage above. She was merely a shell of emotions, nothing but darkness behind her eyes.
He thought back to when he received the serum, when both Iola and Peggy had watched from the viewing balcony, before rushing to his side when he stepped out of his chamber. She had similar features to Peggy, the same attitude, the same love for red lips, the same headstrong personality.
On the occasion that he had rescued Bucky, he remembered seeing a figure guide Zola from his lab. It was her. It had to be. But he was so caught up in his own head in rescuing his friend to acknowledge that she was the soldier protecting the doctor who ruined her.
She had such a good heart back then, her smile sparkled, her laugh shone through the darkened emotions of army soldiers who prepared themselves for their death.
How she was then, and how she is now, he knew she wasn't the same person. He knew that something inside her must have snapped. Zola had said that she fought up telling them up until the last second. He couldn't help but wonder what made her break.
