March 1941

"Peggy, I'm busy with my own work, you know this." Iola spoke through the corded phone.

She had been with the 107th Infantry Regiment at Camp McCoy for a month now, loving the new opportunity that Peggy had provided her with. Escaping Camden was one of the best things to ever happen to her.

"Please darling, I would love for you to experience this with me." Peggy pleaded.

Iola thought it over. Going to Camp Lehigh wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, she would get to see her cousin after all, but her duties to the SSR lay at Camp McCoy, not Camp Lehigh.

"Peggy, I don't think I can, but I will try my best. What date is it again?"

"Next week, March 10th."

Iola sighed.

"I'll see you then."

Iola smoothed out her white shirt before pulling her khaki blazer over the top. She frowned when she notice a run in her tights, quickly changing them before pulling the khaki pencil skirt over hips. There was a swift knock on the bathroom door.

"5 minutes before we arrive madam." A voice echoed.

"I'll be out in a moment."

Iola stared at her reflection. She would never get used to seeing herself as a senior in the war, it was frowned upon for a woman to have so much power. But her and Peggy had done such great things as a team, she was the brawn, and Iola was the brains.

She had worked lightly alongside Doctor Erskine for the serum, but not as much as she was credited for. All she really did was make sure that if anyone was to try and replicate it and or steal it, she was to make sure that they didn't succeed .

As a scientific intelligence senior officer, she didn't see much of the front line. She worked behind the scenes in the science department, analysing intelligence that came about the Nazi Scientific Division known as HYDRA. She had discovered quite recently that they had come into possession of a relic known as the tesseract. The war became more dangerous after this, HYDRA obtaining weapons of mass destruction, so she helped the Doctor to speed up the process of perfecting the serum.

She fixed her blonde curls before she left the bathroom and took her seat beside the window of the plane. She was doing this for Peggy, despite the growing unease in her stomach.

March 9th

Peggy greeted Iola with a warm hug when she pulled up outside of the entrance to Camp Lehigh. It was growing dark, the sun slowly setting on the horizon. It was the evening before Project Rebirth was to commence, and by invitation of both Peggy and Doctor Erskine, she was one of the privileged few who got to witness it.

Peggy looked happily at her baby cousin, a woman of class and strength, brains and beauty. Peggy knew that Iola wanted to be apart of the action, but there was only so much she could do. With women on the front line being frowned upon, she pulled a few strings and had Iola recruited as a senior scientist under the Auxiliary Territorial Service. When Peggy saw how much Iola excelled in this field, she thought of the idea of bringing Iola to America.

The two walked through the camp, not a solider in sight as it was the time of 9pm, and they were all more than likely getting drunk or sleeping.

"The candidate that the Doctor ended up selecting was Steve Rogers." Peggy announced.

Iola couldn't help the look of shock cover her features.

"What happened to Hodge?"

"The Doctor believed he was too headstrong, too arrogant, despite being in perfect physical condition."

Iola pursed her lips in thought. It did make sense that it wouldn't be Hodge, with how his personality made her stomach churn. But Steve Rogers was a skinny kid, with barely any stamina. He had a good heart yes, but was it possible that the serum would make this asthmatic little boy into something more?

"Miss Carter, Miss Hyde."

Doctor Erskine stood before the two. The two ladies smiled at him.

"I'm afraid I must interrupt to ask if I could have a moment with Miss Hyde?" Erskine gestured towards Iola.

He peered at them over his glasses. Peggy reached her hand down to Iola's and gave it a squeeze.

"Of course, Doctor. I'll see you tomorrow." Peggy replied, slipping her hand out from Iola's and walking off into the night.

Both the Doctor and Iola walked over to a green tent labelled 'Doctor Erskine – Communications'. He pulled the entrance flap back, and Iola stepped through.

Her eyes widened when she noticed the chalk board, covered in symbols and equations, the desk littered with papers, the typewriter looking completely worn out. The place was a mess.

"Miss Hyde, as you know, I am the only one who has successfully made this formula to the best of its ability. You know that before it reached this point, Johann Schmidt had injected himself before it was perfected."

"Doctor, with all due respect, I do know all this. What exactly are you trying to say?"

The Doctor looked sadly over at Iola.

"I have a feeling that someone is going to attempt to steal it tomorrow if it is successful on Mr Rogers."

Before he could continue, Iola cut him off.

"That's impossible. I would know about it if that were the case. That's exactly why I know about the serum, to protect you and it."

The Doctor couldn't help but to sigh. She was still so naïve to how ruthless and secretive HYDRA was.

"Miss Hyde, they have been working tirelessly to get their hands on this serum, Schmidt has people on the inside, on this very ground. What I am about to ask you is a massive risk, but I don't have any other choice."

Iola stared at the man. She could hear the anxiety in his voice, she had never seen the man so scared. He took her silence as consent and continued on. He handed her a singular piece of paper. She unfolded and the simple formula of the serum was written.

"I need you to memorise that, and then burn it. Burn it to ashes. You will then become the only other person to know the true contents of the serum. There was a reason I wanted you here, and this is it."

Iola stared at the paper in her hand. She already had the formula imprinted in her mind. Her life was now massively at risk.

"Does she know?"

The Doctor knew that the woman was referring to Peggy. He simply shook his head. Iola's eye scanned the room. She found an old lighter amongst the messy desk, and swiftly set the paper containing the formula alight.

The two watched as the paper twisted in the light of oranges and yellows, the ash drifting through the air until there was nothing left. Iola knew what the Doctor was asking of her, and she was willing to put her life on the line for it.

He knew the serum would work. He knew he would die that day. He also knew that Iola would protect that formula with her life.
