Souls that cross

Chapter 1

Today they would appoint the new captain of 19. Andy had woken up anxiously, she knew she had played her chances in the skyscraper and what her father had said didn't help. She was preparing breakfast for her and her son when a message came from the school saying it would be closed, she tried hard to find a babysitter but none of her was available; she had no choice but to take her son to work.
A: Nathan, come here for a moment
N: what's going on mom?
A: you'll have to come to work with me today, but be good because mom's new boss will arrive
N: okay
She arrived at the station just in time for the arrival of the new captain.
Ripley: 19 in a row, meet your new Captain Robert Sullivan
Robert: I'm glad to meet you, I've been told you are the best team in Seattle.  Tell me your names we start with you Herrera
A: Lieutenant Andrea, Andy Herrera
M: Maya Bishop
D: Dean Miller
B: Benjamin, Ben Warren
J: Lieutenant Jack Gibson
V: Victoria, Vic Hughes
T: Travis Montgomery
Robert: I'll give you your homework for today.  Gibson and Herrera ambulance, Montgomery and Miller ladder truck, Bishop and Warren fire engine, Hughes desk.  You can go
The end of the shift was approaching and Andy knocked on the captain's office to deliver the accident report.
R: forward
A: I wanted to give you the accident report
R: thanks
There was tension in the air, they both felt it.
R: Is your child the baby upstairs?
A: Yes, I'm sorry I brought it but the school was closed and the babysitter was busy
R: Is your husband at work?
A: he is dead
R: I'm sorry for your husband
A: we weren't married
They were interrupted by someone entering.
R: Olivia I told you to knock
O: sorry dad ... and sorry to you too.  She said turning her attention to Andy
A: quiet I'm Andy
R: Olivia could you wait for me outside?
A: there's my son upstairs, he's smaller than you and he's a bit shy but I'm sure he'll like you
O: thanks and sorry again
R: My wife died in a car accident when Olivia was little
A: Nathan's father died on duty, he was a policeman. One evening, a few months after Nathan was born; I was at home waiting for him and I saw that he was late when the doorbell rang; I was ready to scold him for waking up the baby but there were two officers at my door telling me that he had been shot during a call.
At this point his face was covered with tears
R: You didn't have to open up, I know how hard it can be to lose your person.  Now go home, the shift is over
A: thanks captain
After getting changed she went into the kitchen to her son, she was approaching when she heard laughter coming from the kitchen.
N: hello mom
A: hello did you have fun?
N: yes
A: say hello that we have to go
N: Hi Liv
O: hello
A: hi Olivia
She was leaving the station when she noticed that Sullivan's office door was open and he was still filling out paperwork, she decided to come in to greet him.
A: the shift is over for her too
R: oh yes Herrera I had to finish these modules
A: you can finish them tomorrow, stay with your daughter
R: good evening Herrera
A: good evening to you too, Nathan greets
She turned to see her son hiding behind her
A: sorry, he's a bit shy
Sullivan rose from his chair and knelt in front of the child
R: hey
N: Are you mom's new boss?
R: yes it's me, you can call me Robert
N: I'm Nathan
R: what are you doing tonight Nathan?
N: Mom and I get pizza and then watch star wars
R: uh i like star wars too, do so watch the movie carefully and next time you come here we'll talk about it together
N: okay, bye
A: goodbye
Leaving the station she felt a strange sensation, the new unpleasant and grumpy captain had allowed his son to call him by name.
