The rest of summer flew by like a cool breeze, beach days and training sessions whisked away in what seemed like a fever dream. Mai didn't notice how fast the clock was moving until she was standing outside of the massive gymnasium where Karasuno was due to play in a mere few hours. She took a deep breath and walked through the glass doors, eyeing their potential rivals curiously as well as the poster in the middle of the room stating 'The Japanese National High School Volleyball Tournament' in big block letters, followed by 'Miyagi Qualifiers First Preliminaries'.

Her heart rate sped up at the mere sight of the racks of shoes and baskets of balls lining the corridor. She missed volleyball ever so much, and mere training sessions were nowhere near as exciting as real games. Her heart was beating a mile a minute by the time she changed her footwear and found her boys in the upper level of the gym, some watching over the railing and the others spread on a mat on the floor.

She waved politely to the group before manoeuvring over everybody to stand next to Tanaka on the wall. he looked borderline terrifying, his arms crossed and a hard expression on his face, but his concentrated pre-game mood didn't prevent him from greeting his favourite first-year.

"Ready to watch me kick some ass?" He smirked, pointing towards his chest with his thumb. Mai laughed quietly, nodding along to his inane claims. Sure, Tanaka was a vital player to the team, but the term 'kick some ass' could only loosely describe what he performed on the court. It was mainly 'trash talk until they get angry or insecure, then attack'.

"Always am, Ryuu," she grinned. Tanaka spilled such contagious energy on the court, instantly raising his teammates' morals with less encouragement and more confidence. To him, there was no benefit to his over-the-top cheering and mental fortitude other than making his opposition mad beyond sanity, and therefore decreasing their concentration. He had great tactics.

"Anyways, how's your boyfriend feeling? The loverboy hasn't said much today, but he better be ready to win this." Tanaka crossed his arms again and nodded his head towards Tsukishima, who was sitting with his knees to his chest against the wall.
