Mai leant against the railing, the faint sense of content settling over her mind. The ball sailed into the air after Nishinoya received it perfectly, falling into Kageyama's perfect set and being subjected to Hinata's feint, a skill which he'd acquired at the training camp under Bokuto's mentorship. She knew they'd figure out what to do about their tough opponent; they always did. Now, how to land an attack.

She cheered extra loud for Tanaka's serve, grinning at the hungry glint in his eye and the devilish smirk on his face. It wasn't a service ace, but it didn't matter. They weren't expecting one. Hyakuzawa sent it back over the net, a spike which Nishinoya easily maneuvered in their favour. Hyakuzawa moved to follow the ball, but before his eyes could catch it, Hinata shot it down with the duo's new and improved quick attack.

The entire gymnasium quietened, the silence that came from everybody holding their breaths deafening. The referee blew the whistle, slicing through the thick, dead air. Erupting in cheers, Yachi and Mai beamed down at their team, who were all jumping at the success of the powerful move the first-years had concocted. They're made for this, thought Mai from the few metres above, true prodigies.

As the game continued, the word prodigy was front and centre in her mind. Every time Kageyama's perfectly ready fingers pushed the ball to Hinata, who continued to beat the boy standing over a foot above him. They were amazing. Mai could only imagine how well they would play if they actually got on as friends.

"One more point!" said Yachi, gripping the railing tightly as if she was about to pass out.

"C'mon," Mai muttered under her breath, too nervous to shout any longer. "You've got this."

Kageyama jumped for the serve, his hand connecting with the ball and a loud smack echoing through the room. The libero dug it up just in time, setting it up in the only way Hyakuzawa knew how to attack: up high, cross-court shot. The ball ricocheted off Asahi's arm, landing on the sidelines.

Mai sighed, rubbing her eyes underneath her glasses until she saw stars. She prayed silently, to any god that was listening, that Karasuno would advance to the next round. It was selfish, sure, but she pushed that thought out of her mind as Hinata started to advance to the net. He jumped just before it, waiting for the sharp shot that Kageyama was sure to hand him. Once the ball was in his vision, he slammed his hand down, toes touching the ground just after the ball did.
