Making friends was never a challenge for Mai. She never had to worry about being lonely, for Kuroo was only a phone call away and she could jump through Kenma's unlocked window any time of day. Even now, in Miyagi Prefecture, she only had to spend a few hours with Tsukishima and Tadashi before they became her best friends.
While she was perceived as an innocent sweetheart to the majority of people she encountered daily, her actual personality was closer to a brash rascal, much like her companions. The false idea of a perfect little girl was forced upon Mai at a young age, but not young enough to drop her cheeky behaviours. Eventually, her sharp tongue and witty comebacks were limited for close friends to witness, and nobody else.
Tsukishima Kei, however, looked and acted like a pretentious jerk around his equals and only showed a shred of respect for his superiors. That was why Tadashi was the only person seen speaking to him for several years. That was also why the second-years were extremely confused as to why somebody like Mai bonded so tightly with him.
"Surely there's got to be something else going on. Maybe, they're secretly dating and he's a really good kisser," Kinnoshita said, earning nods and murmurs of agreement from most of their small circle. The second-years were grouped together next to the bus, waiting to board and head to Tokyo for the training camp.
"No way, she's too hot to be dating Tsukki," said Nishinoya, rubbing his chin between two fingers like a detective on a homicide case.
The five boys moved their heads in sync to look where he was facing, right at the first-year trio. Tadashi was explaining something he was obviously very passionate about to Mai, who was half asleep, leaning against Tsukishima's chest to keep her from falling over as he scrolled through his phone. He had to practically drag her out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure they were on time.
"I don't know, they seem very close."
The team boarded the bus, pairing off while the second-years kept a close eye on the trio from a few rows behind. Their suspicions of Tsukishima and Mai dating grew tenfold when Tadashi offered to sit next to Yachi, as to keep the awkward girl company and to not split up the two. They sat in the row directly in front of the suspicious pair.
