"No more evil doing for you, little akuma. . . Time to de-evilizeeeee!"
Ladybug hit the akuma with her yoyo, a triumphant smile on her face.
"Bye, bye, little butterfly!" she said, waving. And with the smile never leaving her face, she faced Chat Noir.
"Pound —"
"I have to go, Ladybug. See you when I see you," her partner simply said, and was soon gone.
The triumphant smile left Ladybug's face and was soon replaced by a frown. It was the third time that Chat Noir insisted on leaving before they could even do their famous "pound it" after defeating Hawkmoth's villain.
What's wrong with him? she thought to herself. But before she can even think deeper into it, her earrings flashed — she's about to transform back.
"Are you okay, Marinette?" Tikki asked as soon as she transformed back and was back in her room. "You look distracted."
"I aaaaam," Marinette whined. "I don't know why Chat's acting that way!" Frustration was evident on her.
Tikki looked at her with a deadpan expression on her cute face. "Are you sure you don't know?" she asked, circling Marinette. "What about your conversation with him three nights ago?"
Marinette blinked, remembering that night. She shook her head, denying that Chat Noir's behavior has something to do with what happened that night.
"He wasn't serious with what he said," Marinette said — or more like assured herself. But when she saw Tikki's look, she asked, "Or. . . Was he?"
Tikki shrugged. "I don't know, Marinette. He seemed serious that night. Maybe he got tired with you being in denial of your feelings."
Marinette groaned. "I'm not in denial! We simply —"
"Marinette!" Tikki screamed cutely, interrupting Marinette's tantrum. "He really likes you," Tikki said. "You rejected him a lot of times in the past already, but he keeps insisting that you'd come around and accept his love. But you kept denying, so I think he really got tired and avoiding interactions with you as much as possible is his way of coping up. . . And you were a bit harsh that night."
Marinette turned silent, remembering her conversation with Chat Noir three nights ago.
"The sky is a little bit more starry tonight, Mi'lady," Chat Noir said, sitting on the roof with Ladybug on his side. They're on one of their night patrols.
"Sure," Ladybug replied, pretending to be bored. "And I swear, if this is one of your stupid confessions again, I'm going to leave you here alone."
Chat Noir smiled sadly, but Ladybug was staring at the stars to even noticed it. He swallowed a lump on his throat before speaking again.
"Actually," Chat Noir began. "I do have something to say to —"
"Spare me of your confession about your 'end —"
"I give up, Ladybug," he blurted out.
Ladybug didn't move, telling herself that this is one of Chat Noir's jokes. There's no way that Chat Noir's going to give up on her — she convinced herself. He's too head-over-heels for her.
"I'm letting go of my feelings for you. I'm finally accepting my defeat after months of running after you. Perhaps, it's time for me to give someone else a chance, and to leave you alone with the boy that you like. Adieu, Mi'lady."
And then he left before Ladybug could even process it all.
"He's probably joking," she tried convincing herself again, deciding not to take his speech to seriously. "He'll be fine tomorrow."
But he never went back to what he used to be around Ladybug.
Marinette looked down. Maybe he did give up for good.
