Thane's POV

My father basically locked me in my room. He has guards stationed outside my room to make sure I don't leave my room tonight. I am not allowed to see the girls untill tomarrow. He says that I can't leave because during his selection he got kicked in his special place by my mother when he was walking around this same night. But I am not my father, and I refuse to be caged in my own room.

As quiet as possible, I creep over to my window. Gale and Ky , my guards, were right outside my door. They know me better than most, so they are probabily  listen very closely. I have already opened my window a bit claiming to anyone who came in that my room was too stuffy. After pushing an opening big enough for my body, I slipped out.

My bedroom is only on the second floor, so I didn't have that far to climb. I gripped tightly onto the small ledges that I carved out when I was about 11 years old. If I fell then it would alert people I was out. Most people might call me foolish or stupid from not listening to my dad, but I am a firm believer that you have to learn lessons from your own experiences. This was a time I was glad I didn't listen.

I started walking around to the gardens from where my climb down brought me. Much to my displeasure, I was on the complete wrong side of the house. As quietly as I possibly could I started my trek. When ever I would step on a stick or anything that crunched I would wait a long time to start walking again.

The moon seemed to be climbing slower the in the sky than usually. Snap! I heard a larger branch snap under my boot. Freezing immediately, I waited. After about two minutes, I thought the coast was clear. I took a half step when I was crushed. I collapsed onto the ground with something on top of me. I pulled of my knife and pressed it to the throat of whatever was on me, knowing it was a person.

"What are you doing here?" I asked the person suspiciously.

"I am so sorry. I couldn't stand being kept in that room any long. My name is McKenzie Baets." The person I was holding said. Realizing that she wasn't a threat, I lowered my knife." Where were you able to get that knife? Did you steal it from the kitchen?" She asked me. Apparently her eyes had not adjusted enough for her to tell I was the prince.

"Well if you must know it was a gift from my father." I told her trufully. I got the knife from my father, who got it from his father, who got it from his father and on and on.

"I didn't catch your name." She asked.

"That's because I didn't give it, my love"  I liked that she was so open with me right now. I vowed I would tell her before I left her to retire to my my room but not before.

"Playing hard to get I see." She said. Ha! If she only knew.

"Well then, may I escort you to the gardens?"

"Well, of course. Can't pass up an offer like that now could I." She giggled after that. Her laugh was amazing. It sounded like soft piano music.  Waking slowly with her we talked. She told me about her life back home as a three before she became on of the selected. I was already falling in love. Before she came she was going to work in a library and become an author.

"What would you do if you were to become the queen?" I asked her truly interested.

"I would like to keep writing and reading. Maybe learn how to play an instrument." She answered. If I picked her I would let her do all those things. We were almost to the gardens. I told her to be quiet because I could hear whispers comming from the garden.

"Don't you remember America when it was you first night here and you told me you didn't even want to be here. I am so glad you decided  to stay with me." I heard.

"Crap, my parents." I whispered under my breath. " McKenzie we need to turn back there are people over there." I whispered louder, so she could hear. I heard my mom asked my father if he heard anything. He stood up walking our way. "McKenzie, run back to your room. The King and Queen are coming. Run. Go."

"No. I can't leave you alone." She said right back at me.

"It's okay. It's not like they would kill their eldest son. Go, Please."

"Thane." She wispered before she ran. I turned to make it sound like it was me making the crunching sound. Something grabbed the collar of my shirt and pulled me around the corner.

"Thane Calix Schreave, what are you doing outside of your bedroom?! Come on young man." My father said. He let go for a second kissing my mom telling her to go to bed. He drug me up to his office.

"I know that you don't like to listen to follow rules, but jumping out of the window is very irresponsible. I would be a lot angrier but I am proud that you didn't hurt yourself or that girl that was with you." My father said lecturing me. I did a double take when he talked about a girl.

"Wait. How did you know?" I asked him. I really thought I did good cover her tracks and being quiet.

"I actually didn't. Until just now." He said with a smirk. Dang it! I played right into him. "I wished you would have listened, but the past is the past. Let's get you back to you room."

I walked a step behind him with my head hung. I changed my attitude and help my head up. My dad at least didn't catch McKenzie. I was proud of that. I laughted on the inside when we got near my room. Both Ky and Gale were a sleep outside my door. My dad walked up to them and wacked them in the back of the head. They pulled out their weapons and pointed them at my father. A second later they dropped the weapons and fell to one knee, bowing their heads.

"Sorry Your Majesty." They said at the same time.

"You both ah should be too. Look what I found roaming around outside." He said to them. I found the whole situation very funny and told my dad I was going to bed.

McKenzie is amazing. I can't wait to officially meet her tomorrow.
