The pain had eventually subsided but the hunger was still there... More than ever, now. Matt had helped me up the stairs to my bedroom and went home just over an hour ago. Caroline stayed with me, and insisted that she slept the night. So we were now both sharing my double bed and watching The Notebook, which Caroline also insisted on.

What actually happened tonight?

"Why did you come over tonight?", I wondered out loud.

"Well, to tell the truth. I followed you and Klaus here", she was fiddling with the corner of the pillow case nervously.

Huh? Why?

"Why?"

"I don't trust him. And neither should you. If you really knew about him, you'd run screaming", she finally glanced up at me.

"I can make my own mind up about him", I bitterly replied.

"Who turned you, Ash?", Caroline carefully steered the conversation away from a certain hybrid.

I shrugged, "I don't know."

She frowned, and turned her whole body so she was fully facing me, "Did he turn you?", she accused.

"He wouldn't do that", although my voice betrayed me by sounding unsure.

Caroline laughed a little, "You really don't know him well enough if you say that."

"Do you have feelings for Klaus?"

Caroline looked baffled, "No! Have you not just been listening to what I'm saying about this guy. He is the devil, himself."

We both looked back to the TV in silent, mulling over our own thoughts. It was our favourite scene from the entire film. Where Noah confesses he still loves her.

"It wasn't over... It still isn't over", then Noah swoops in for the kiss and they finally get to be together.

We both know, the thought of Klaus lingers in the air between us.

...........

I was hoping to wake up and realise it was all just a bad dream. However, I woke to feel a burning sensation on the side of my face. It was scorching, I felt as though I was burning alive. That was because I was burning alive. It was the sun. I sped for the first dark space that was sheltered from the sun. I crouched in the corner of my room, and for the first time in my life I was terrified to walk into the sunlight.

Caroline stirred from the noisy screech I had made from the burn on my face. She scanned the room and her eyes landed on mine, then back to the sunlight. In a second, she was by my side again, "I'm so sorry. The sunlight thing must have slipped my mind", she looked genuinely sorry.

"Why can you walk in the sunlight, without getting burnt?", I frowned.

She held her hand up to me, revealing a giant ugly ring on her finger, and gave me a sympathetic look, "You need one of these to do that. Bonnie put some witchy spell on it to protect me from the sunlight."

"Wait. Bonnie Bennet's a witch?"

"Yeah. And she's pretty good at it too", she smiled fondly, "And don't worry. I'll get her to make you one too, but you just need to stay in the shadows of your house until she does."

I felt too many emotions swelling up inside of me and I didn't know what to make of it. I felt sad, mad, confused, scared, but most of all overjoyed that I had Caroline here with me. If I had to have gone through all this by myself, I would have broken down by now.
