Chapter 14
I raked my hands through Chris's hair and stared at the smooth planes of his face. The little laugh lines at the sides of his mouth, and the smooth little crease between his eyebrows. Like he still couldn't relax, even in sleep. I took my free hand and smoothed my index finger along the little crease until it finally eased up and he looked peaceful. Why is it people always look so innocent and baby like when asleep?
Feeling the car make a sharp turn to the left I quickly looked up and noticed that we were almost there. I was almost home. We raced up the slightly damp road towards the cul-de-sac where my home was.
The car slid to a stop outside my home and I exhaled the air I had inhaled and forgotten to exhale. Chris' eyelids began to flutter as he stirred.
Staring staright ahead of me at the drivers shiny bald head I put the 'mask' back on before he eyes finally snapped open...I heard him take a deep breath in and the weight on my lap was lifted.
"Sorry. I guess I fell asleep." He murmered quietly.
"Yeah, I guess." I muttered opening the door. Shivereing from the sudden gust of called air, I wrapped my arms around myself and rubbed my hands up and down my arms. When did it get so cold?
I could just hear my mum's voice now saying that I should of worn a thermal vest...or five layers...
Mum! Leaving Chris in the car, since he couldn't get out with me blocking the exit, I ran up the crumbly stone steps toward my house and knocked on the door frantically.
"Mum! Mum! Open the door!" My knuckles were feeling sore by now from all the banging on the door.
Muffled footsteps came down the corridor and I could see a vague short shadow. The door opened and I jumped onto my mum.
"Woah! Calm down there Hailey!" She said as she tried to get her balance back whilst putting her arms around me. And with me being taller than her, I probably also weighed more than her making it even harder to gain her balance...but I didn't want to let go. Stuffing my nose into her neck I inahled the smell of home and cookies she always seems to carry around. I never knew how much I would miss it.
OK, I'm a mummy's girl, can you blame me?
Heavy footsteps came up behind me.
"Oh, hello Chris. How are you? How is the family?"
My eyes snapped open then narrowed in when I heard that sentence.
"You know him?" I asked as I pulled away and stared suspicously between a guilty looking mother and a bashful Chris.
"They're fine Ms.Green. How are you?" Chris said as he raised his arm to rub the back of his neck.
"I hope they are all fit and healthy. And what about your little gang of besties?"
Did that woman seriously just say besties? I raised my eyebrows at and gave a quick smirk at Chris this but then quickly forgot about it.
"Woah, woah, woah. Hold up, wait a minute. I think we are forgetting the most important question here!" I said butting in before Chris could comment about his 'besties'.
"How do you know them?" I asked the woman again.
She looked at me blankly before mouthing 'Oh!' and nodding to say she understood. I nodded along with her and waved my hands in a motion of a circle to tell her to get on with it.
