Chapter 22
====
-------
All I wanted to do was scream. To cry, claw and crawl my way out of this infinite darkness. Away from the loneliness and back into the real world. No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible. Whenever I thought I was close I was cruelly and roughly shoved back into the blackness....the silence....
Alone.

Chris
------------
Chris walked out of the door, relief crashing donw upon him like a wave. The guilt still gnawed at him though, behind the relief but still there. He could never forgive himself for what he had let happen to his mate. The one he was supposed to protect...NO....had to protect. It was his duty.
And he failed her.
Ever since they admitted her into the hospital he couldnt, no wouldn't, leave her bedside. Not until she woke up. The doctors had told him she had only fainted from the shock and her body had just sort of shut down for a while but Chris still fretted and sweated over her. His parents had heard what had happened and came to visit, but they had to leave after the nurse told them to promising to be back the next day.
But when her beautiful brown eyes opened and looked up at him, Chris felt like the heavens above had opened up and could hear the heavenly choir singing.
He hadn't wanted to leave her alone for one millisecond but he had to go get her mother whom had been pulling her own hair out over her daughters wellbeing. She had been suffering too and he wouldn't want her to suffer and doubt him anymore than she was now. Chris knew she was doubting if he could take care of her beloved daughter after that but...
Chris pushed open the sticky heavy double doors to the cafeteria and saw her mother standing in line with her baggy red shirt and sweats with white trainers, not an ounce of makeup on her face. Or a hint of a smile.
Chris slowly walked up to her, telling her the news, looking at the way the smile and hope slowly spread along to her face. The smile actually going up to her eyes.
She quickly left the 2 sandwiches she was going to buy and ran down the hospital corridors to her daughter, the only thing important to her ever since her husband left with Chris closly behind.
Walking into the cold room Chris and Hailey's mother made their way towards the bed. To where the most valued person in their life lay, still breathing but not waking up.
Chris felt the pain as his heart painfully smashed into pieces, as those pieces shriveled up and died as the doctor came in and told them the problem.
Chris slowly lowered his head into his hands as they clawed painfully up and down his face and into his hair.
Hailey's mother stood up, the smile long gone from her face, her eyes glazing over and a single lone tear travelling down her face, curving into her chin and slowly falling to the floor where it disappeared.
==============================
Hailey's Mother
-------
Hailey's mother stood in the line of the hospital cafeteria holding two pathetic looking sandwiches in her thin hands. Chris had told her to buy some food after almost a whole day looking over Hailey with no food.
Her baby couldn't just leave her alone.
She knew Chris thought she doubted him on the thought of looking after her daughter, but she really didn't. She knew he would jump in front of any danger that may go towards Hailey at any time, no second thoughts, but she still saw the look in his eyes.
She had just moved up one step in the line when Chris came running towards her, the news he brought lighting her up, inside and out. Filling her with hope and happiness once again. The smile spreading across her face.
Hailey's mum quickly dropped the sandwiches on the ground and ran towards her daughter, into her room.
Where she lay breathing, sleeping but never waking, the news the doctor brought numbing her inside, all hope extinguished and long gone....
