I drove Caleb to the lab, asking him what he wanted to show me the entire way there. "It's a surprise," he kept saying. Finally, when we got there, he grabbed me by the wrist and started tugging me forward. I glared at him, annoyed. But he ignored me and continued dragging me to his lab."You are never going to believe this." He then explained about switching Tris's ashes and the serum he had made. When he mentioned switching Tris's ashes I was extremely upset and I guess it showed it, too, because he quickly held up his hand and said "Let me finish." I shut up, because: a) I was too tired to argue and b) I had never seen Caleb passionate enough to talk back to me about anything. When he got to the part about bringing Tris back, I was so surprised I dropped my coffee and it shattered on the floor. Caleb stared at it, obviously upset about the mess but not daring to say a word.
I leaned against the wall for support, my knees growing weak. Everything was spinning, and I felt like I was going to collapse. Everything was out of focus, I think Caleb is screaming at me. He waved his hand in front of my face and shook my shoulder, finally bringing me back to reality. "Four! Snap out of it! Four!" I stared at him. "You... can... bring her back?" I asked carefully, hope and anxiety filling up inside me. "If my calculations are correct, then yes. But... it's taking a big risk. I have no tests to prove this will work. If it doesn't, Tris's ashes can't be used again. We have one chance... are you sure?"
I should have been startled, at a loss for words. Instead, I knew exactly what I was going to say as soon as he finished this statement. I can't say I wasn't taken aback at all, but it seemed my mouth knew what to say before my head did. But I meant everything I said. I looked him straight in the eye, and completely honestly, I said, "I trust you. Do it."
