Caleb smiled mischeviously and pulled out a test tube and a jar full of a gray powder. Tris's ashes, I thought. The sight of it made me want to throw up, but I held it back, thinking that shattering my cup with coffee in it and throwing up on the floor of Caleb's lab would certainly be frowned upon. Instead, I sat down, feeling weak and light-headed. Caleb gave me a quick and worried glance. I frowned. I did not need or want his concern. But I said nothing.

I watched in amazement as Caleb grabbed a nearby knife and cut his hand, like he did at the choosing ceremony so long ago. He opened the test tube and let his blood drop into it, then wrapped a piece of cloth around his hand to stop the bleeding. Gently, he lifted the test tube and mixed the contents with Tris's ashes, stirring the two together with the knife he had used. I noticed he wasn't being as neat as he normally was in a science lab, not that I pay much attention.

We watched the mixture for what seemed like an eternity. Nothing happened. I glanced at Caleb. I saw the hope that had pumped and encouraged him earlier slowly fade from his eyes, and suddenly I was filled with rage.

Caleb was looking upon the jar with utter despair. He thought he failed. I say otherwise. "No!" I screamed, making Caleb jump backwards and back away from the table into a nearby corner. I stood up, still in my wave of fury. "No, no, no! Tris, you are not going to leave me, do you hear me?! Tris! Come back!" I pounded my fist on the lab table, making the jar with the mixture rumble and vibrate off the table, shattering to the ground. I kneeled down next to the mess and my wave of anger disappeared, replaced by sadness. Caleb was gazing down at me sadly, he knew it was hopeless.

"I love you!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. Tears flowed freely down my face; I didn't care. A tear rolled down my cheek and added to the mixture. And then everything changed.

The tear seemed to fall in slow motion, dripping into the ashes. And then it exploded. Ashes spun everywhere, caught in a twister of the mixture swirling completely around the room, stinging my face. And then we were engulfed in a blinding white light.
