"They're late," Cara complained.

"Who cares?" I responded, watching Cara pace back and forth from my chair. "They're alive."

She huffed. "Yea, I guess that's true."

"So," I started, pulling up another chair and gesturing for her to sit in it. "What was so important that you risked your life to get?"

Cara stared at me for a moment, confused, and then blinked as she remembered. "Oh. You mean at the lab?" I nodded as she sat down.

She pulled a necklace out from her top and fiddled with it nervously. I waited patiently as she opened it, her hands shaking. She sniffed, obviously fighting tears. "Um, it's-it's...a locket my parents gave me before they...passed away."

I leaned forward to see the pictures in the locket Cara held out. There were three pictures: one was a woman with Cara's dark, curly hair and warm brown eyes, and another was a skinny man with salt-and-pepper hair and dull green eyes. The third one was in the middle, and it was of the two together, smiling, with a little girl in between them.

"These are your parents?" I asked, already knowing the answer. "Yes," Cara croaked. I looked up at her. She was sniffling, holding back the tears that threatened to spill. For some reason all I wanted to do was hug her and tell her everything would be okay.

So I closed the locket and stood up. I grabbed her hand and pulled her up, too, and then pulled her to my chest and let her cry. My shirt would probably be ruined, but I didn't care. We could've stood there for ages and it wouldn't have bothered me. As long as she was with me.

And in that moment I was absolutely certain of one thing: I was completely in love with the girl in my arms.

Hey guys! Sorry for the short chapter! Although I guess all my chapters are short, huh? Should I make them longer?
