The doctor approached them, and well the news, not as good as they hoped it would be. Due to multiple complications during the surgery, the risk of infection and therefore Lily's body rejecting the lungs were very high, she was hanging on by a thread.
Lavender couldn't take it anymore, it felt as if the walls were closing in on her throat and choking her until she could breath no more. She ran outside in the rain and sat on a brown hospital bench.
April fell into her seat, suddenly her legs felt too week to stand on, her eyes were filled with tears she couldn't let go off in order to remain strong for her friend, who had more of a reason to be sad. Adrian sat beside her and wrapped his arm around her pulling her close to his chest in hopes of comforting her.
Adrian felt weirdly protective of her and could not bring himself to let her go.
April did not quite see this coming, it was weird but comforting at the same time, safer than she had ever before.
Lily was now in the ICU, no visitors aloud, Lavender was back, all three of them watched her from behind the glass door.
She looked so weak April thought to herself.
The ICU halls were freezing cold and April was shivering though she tried her best to hide it. Adrian still noticed, took off his jacket and placed it on her shoulders.
"How did you know? Thank you." mouthed April with the most calm smile on her face.
Adrian didn't say a word and simply placed one of his hands on her shoulder.
Hours later, they were still standing there, they didn't want to leave Lavender alone and she refused to leave.
Adrian had to go to the restroom leaving Lavender and April alone.
"So what's the deal with you and him?" Lavender asked intrigued.
"Wha- Adrian?" April knew who she meant, Lavender nodded her head yes. "He's my roommate, I don't know what it is you're referring to.
"Ah please, he just noticed you were cold without you making it even a tad obvious, and did you even notice the way he looked at you, please, don't tell me you're that clueless."
"He's an ass we barely got along until now, I think he's just trying to make up for that, I'm not reading much into it."
"I'm just saying-"Lavender wanted to add to what April had just said but Adrian was back.
"April, don't you think we should get back?" he asked.
"Well Lavender, would it be okay if we did?" April was now facing her.
"Yes, yes go, I am not leaving until they drag me out of here." she cried making sure the entire hospital staff would hear her.
April and Adrian walked back to their room and each switched into their pjs in turns. April lied in her bed and Adrian in his.
"Ace, I can't sleep." Adrian declared.
"Ace? Adrian who are you talking to?" April asked her eyes pacing around the room looking for a third person.
"You, I think Ace fits you perfectly." His voice hugging the letters in the nickname he had given her so softly she dies a million times in that second.
"That's nice, I can't sleep either."
-"I have an idea." Adrian sat up. "how about we finish reading the book you stole from me together."
"I did not steal- ugh fine Adrian I stole your book, you happy now?" her eyes a puddle of frustration.
"Very." he smirks. "Now come on." He moved a little to the right leaving her a place to sit.
"Why are you so kind to me all of a sudden, got too tired of being a jackass?" April meant to be harsh.
"Just enjoy it while it lasts." he simply replies.
April sat next to him and he began reading to her in the softest tone for hours. April was cracking up to barely anything, Adrian was getting mad and asked her to focus, but she could never really. Adrian had never heard quite a comforting laugh.
"Ace..." Adrian exclaimed out of nowhere.
"Yeah?"
"I don't find you annoying." he lets out a light laugh.
"Aww thank you Adrian, I don't find you annoying either." She couldn't stop laughing.
"Come on now, I'm being serious some people can be a lot sometimes." he lets out as seriously as possible.
"I mean I don't know many people, you know, memory loss. But the people I got to know again aren't that bad.
"Wait, memory loss?" his pupils were wide.
"Well when we first met, you didn't let me say a word so..."
"For exactly how long are you going to keep using that against me?" he stares deeply into her eyes.
"For as long as I find it affective." She says raising her chin.
She briefly explained what had happened to Adrian.
"Not only was he the biggest asshole to you, but he also made you fly out of a widow! Wow, if I ever see him again, he will never see the light of the day."
They were both laughing now.
April being April had to ask...
"What do you have against people?"
"My mom died when I was four, and my dad has me locked inside the house. Ever since I never really fit in anywhere." he said quite unbothered. "Not like it's a big deal or anything."
April took him in her arms and held him close.
"No one deserves that." she whispers in his ear.
"Thanks Ace." He whispers back.
They continued reading, Adrian felling a little more comfortable around his roommate now, came a tad closer.
By three in the morning they were already half way through the book.
The next morning, April opened her eyes, it took her a second to realize that she wasn't sleeping in her bed, and that she was definitely laying on Adrian's chest, her sudden movements woke him as well...
