The world seemed to slow to a stop around her as her heart began to pound in her ears. She hadn't seen Dia since she and Lucifer first opened the casino so many centuries ago. The Crowns very rarely left the island and when they did they never left alone. Their angel guardians were always near by. Gabriel was Dia's angel. And she and Gabriel were most certainly NOT on speaking terms.
"Dia..." She whispered, slamming her book shut.
Dia, a tall muscular man with dark as night skin and white hair turned to smile at her, crossing his legs and leaning back against the bench as he looked at her. "Sister Ruby. You're looking well. Motherhood suites you." He said gesturing to the boys playing on the playground equipment together.
She swallowed hard, she didn't like having her boys that close to a crown. And not to mention she didn't see Gabriel anywhere which made a sickening pit form in her stomach.
"Cut the sister crap. We are not family. What do you want?" She snapped.
"So testy. As usual." Dia said, chuckling. "Just here to have a friendly chat. Is that such a bad thing?"
"You fucks just don't know when to give up do you? I'm never coming back to that forsaken island. I'm never leading your choirs. I'm not ever going to be a crown."
Dia sighed and turned to look off towards the boys. "That's a shame. We could keep you and your family safe you know. From him."
Ruby swallowed hard, "my ex husband has no idea where I am. I don't need your protection."
"Ruby ruby ruby..." Dia started shaking his head, "he's been here all along. Bidding his time, waiting for his chance. He failed to kill you back at the hotel. He won't fail again. And next time he attacks it won't just be you he goes after. It'll be those handsome little boys of yours..."
Ruby shuddered, clenching her jaw. "How do you know what happened at the hotel?" She whispered.
"Oh my dear. We've been watching you ever since you left inkwell and his protection. We knew eventually your luck would run out and you'd need our protection from him."
She shook her head and grabbed her bag and her cane. "Your help is the last thing I need. You can all go jump off a cliff for all I care." She said as she started to make her way towards the boys.
"Ahh that's a shame ruby. Cause see, I wasn't just asking. We have waited patiently long enough. Oh Gabriel!" He called and suddenly there was a swoop of white and gold that only ruby could see as the arch angel Gabriel swooped in from the treeline and grabbed the twins from off the playground and moving to fly just above the play set. "Good to see you ruby." He called as he held the confused and scared boys who couldn't see what was holding them in the air as they struggled to get free, reaching and calling out for ruby.
Ruby's eyes widened and her heart stopped. "Gabriel put them down! They have nothing to do with us!" She yelled.
"You want them? Come and get them." He said before he turned and started flying away.
Ruby's wings sprouted from her back and she stumbled forward, pain shooting through her before she shot off after him and he took to flying higher and up into the clouds, ruby quickly followed, struggling to keep pace. She was still healing and far out of practice but as soon as she got above the clouds he smirked at her and stopped, watching her struggle to stay in the air.
"Look at you. You've fallen so far ruby. We could have given you everything and yet you chose this as the alternative? Hunted by the creature you've devoted your whole life to? Weakened by mortal attachments? It's pathetic if you ask me..."
"No one fucking asked you! Give me my sons!" She yelled before rushing him, he easily avoided her and smirked at her.
"Join us and I'll see to it that no harm befalls either of them."
"Either you give them to me or I'll rip your wings from your back and stuff pillows with them!" She yelled, tears of panic and pain flowing down her eyes as she listened to the cries of her poor baby boys in the grip of that bastard.
"Shame. Thought you were smarter than that ruby. I'll see you at home then." He said, shaking his head before diving back down towards the ground.
She quickly followed him, struggling to catch up and as she tried to pull up to level out she ended up tumbling across the ground, only stopping the skid roll she sent herself into when she hit a tree.
She looked up dizzily to see Belial standing with Gabriel's throat in his hand and his eyes glowing blood red.
"I've warned you before brother. Do not ever touch my ruby." He snarled his voice changing as he spoke from the smooth warm honey voice to that all too fimiliar demonicly deep voice as his handsome features melted and burned away to reveal his true black fur covered form with the tall curled horns. Lucifer.
