Ruby sat there at her desk, watching T walk out of her office with that sad, confused and lost puppy look on his face. He genuinely seemed like he didn't want to go but he did. He left. He fucking left.
She leaned forward in her seat and rubbed her eyes. This was such a mess. Never did she think that she would have let her guard down enough for someone to do this to her, to hurt her like this. And good God did this hurt. She had trusted that cup. Told him her whole story, let him into a part of her heart she had closed up after Lucifer had left it and what did she have to show for it? A pain in her chest that felt like it might kill her? A racing mind of why's and what ifs?
She shook her head and tried to regain her composure as she head a knock on her door and in stepped wheezy. "Heya boss... you want a drink?" He asked, holding up a bottle of scotch and two glasses.
She felt tears stinging her eyes but she smiled at her friend and nodded. "You know me so well wheezy. Lock the door please."
He did as she asked and came over, pouring the two glasses full of the bitter brown fluid and he handed one to her which she happily chugged.
"So what happened ruby?" He asked gently, watching her pour another glass.
"He left. Dice was right. He is in some trouble on the main land and it caught up with him... now I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Is...is there just something wrong with me? Lucifer doesn't want me. T doesn't want me... wheezy... I've lived longer than almost everyone on this earth... why does no one want me?" Tears rolled down her cheeks as she spoke and wheezy reached out and took her hand.
"Ruby. It is not you. You're beautiful, have the voice of an angel, the body of a supermodel, a fashion sense that could kill and you're just over all the kindest person I've ever met. You'd give your soul for a boy you found on the street. Ruby you're amazing. Those guys are idiots."
Ruby squeezed his hand and smiled. "Wheezy. You're the greatest." She said with a sad chuckle.
He smiled, "Hey. I do what I can." He said with a shrug.
He let her drink away her sorrows, listening to her as she complained about T and Satan for hours, happy as always to be her shoulder to cry on and her ear to chew off.
When she finally passed out drunk he smiled and picked her up, carrying her to her room where dice was waiting.
"Hey wheezy... is mom ok?" Dice asked quietly.
"Yeah kid she's fine. Just drunk. She's gonna be hung over tomorrow." He said as he walked past dice and into her room where he pulled off her shoes after laying her on the bed and he tucked her into it.
"Drunk? Mom never gets drunk." Dice said as wheezy shut the door to ruby's room.
"Yeah. It's cause she saves it for when she's really upset... come to think of it I haven't seen her polish off a bottle of scotch before... this must be really bad."
"Whys she so upset? Did something happen with T?" Dice asked.
"Yeah. He left her to avoid those gangs breaking his knees. He went back on the run and left your mama's heart in pieces."
Dice sat on the sofa rubbing his eyes, "geez. Poor ma... that asswipe wasn't good enough for her anyway..."
"True as that might be kid... She did love him." Wheezy said before heading for the door.
"You and I will be picking up some slack tomorrow. She's gonna be really off. Go to bed kid. Sleep." He said before he left.
Dice sighed and stood. He was 16 now but he felt much older, working at the casino had done that quickly. But one thing that never seemed to change no matter how old he got. His mama was his world.
He went to her room and laid next to her, curling up to her side like he would when he was small and as if on instinct she moved to cradle his head against her as she slept.
"It'll be ok mom. You'll always have me." He whispered before falling asleep.
