Me and Alex were standing out in the snow. It was just before dark, and the sun was lowering behind a snowy mountain. Alex had her arms wrapped around herself. I knew she was blaming herself for Unknown Steve leaving, but it wasn't her fault. I was the one who had made him mad. I knew what I had done was the right thing, but this wasn't the time to think about it. We had to try to become this "Balancer".
"So," I started. I turned to Unknown Alex. "Do you have any idea how this is supposed to work?" She uncrossed her arms and pace a little, like she was trying to think.
"I'm not quite sure." She finally said. That was not really the response I had been hoping for. I had just learned of this so called "Balancer" that could be created. Alex was the only person that was on my side right now that knew anything about them. I had been hoping she had known about it. After all, she had been one of Empty Steve's most powerful and trusted creations.
"Is there any details you remember about how Empty tried to fuse the steves together?" I asked. "Maybe something he did to them first. Or if it had to be done in a specific area?" She stopped pacing and looked up. I could tell she was really trying to remember any details. I just hoped I wasn't putting to much pressure on her.
"Well," She began. "I never saw to many of Empty's attempts. He usually used some sort of machine, which we don't have, not do we have the materials, or time to make one. Bit it seems the two steves or alexs involved would be facing each other, and when the machine was turned on, one would fuse to the other. Like one of them will control it all." She stopped and looked at me again. "That'll be you." She stated. I knew she didn't want to be the one in control of that much power, but she still wanted to help people by doing this. I was fine with being the one in control, if we could even figure this out in the first place. She sighed. "We don't have anything Empty has. I don't know how we are even supposed to try to do this." That's when it hit me.
"Wait hold on." I cut in. She looked back at me. "You said up until this point, every single time Empty tried to make a Balancer, he ended up making a Fusion Steve." She nodded. "That means that a Fusion Steve would be a failed attempt to make a Balancer, right?" She nodded again. At this point she looked very confused, but in my head I was putting the pieces together. "If he never made a balancer, and instead kept making Fusion Steves, what if that means he's not going about it the right way." Her eyes widened as she began to grasp what i was saying.
"So your saying that maybe we don't need a machine!" Alex said, beginning to sound hopeful again. I nodded. While I didn't think we would need a machine, I had another reason to believe Empty was missing something. I wasn't sure if i was right, but I had a strong gut feeling that I was. But before I could confirm, I needed to know more about why the Unknowns and Blanks were the ones being used.
"Alex. What do the Unknowns and Blanks have that Empty knew he needed to even try to make a Balancer?" I asked.
"He needed us for our energy." He said. "None of us know how, but somehow he gained the ability to create us Unknown and Blank Steves and Alexs, either from giving a pre existing steve or alex the energy, or by creating them from thin air." That was interesting. He could create them from nothing, or, by how it sounds, infecting someone with an energy.
"You say he needs an energy to make them though." I pointed out. "What energy is that?"
"For us Unknowns, it's Unknown Energy. For the Blanks, it's Blank Energy." Well that makes sense. "It takes a lot more Unknown or Blank Energy to create a steve or alex from nothing, but they will be more powerful. I myself was created solely from Unknown Energy." She looked down a little. "So was the Unknown Steve that was with us before." I still feel kind of of bad about that. It was my fault that Unknown Steve had gotten mad and left. But I knew I had made the right decision. He wanted to become a Balancer for the power, not so he could help people. But now that I knew what energy Empty had used, my gut feeling was even stronger.
