Thunder roars outside the Gilbert family estate. Emma wakes to her parents arguing downstairs.
"Please Amy, you can't keep doing this!" her father yells. He never raised his voice around Emma, but he didn't know that she could hear every argument.
"Why not Antonio? You're never here anyways!" her mother cries.
"You know I never like to talk about my past," he says, quieter now. "But please, listen to me just this once. There are bad people who want to hurt you because of me. I need you to stay here for now. I'll take care of it."
"No! You've kept us trapped here for years! Emma only has one friend and she's never seen the world!" Emma could hear the tears in her mother's voice.
"Amy-" The front door slams shut. Emma hears glass shatter against the granite floors.
