Val's POV--- Age 13

It was supposed to be a normal day. Get up, dressed, eat breakfast, study or train. That's how it was supposed to be. It wasn't supposed to happen the way it was. We weren't expecting for our dad to show up that day. My brother and I weren't supposed to become orphans. Yet that's exactly what happened.

I woke up, got dressed in a pair of running shorts and a tank top with a pair of converses. I ate breakfast and then went to do my usual run since it was sunny. Afterwards I went back to my room to grab the work from the previous week and headed for the library. I sat down at the same table as Jace and started on the week's assignments. When the clock chimed 2 p.m. I went to the training room and started practicing with Jace on the bow staff. When I knocked Jace down for the third time I jumped not expecting to hear someone clapping. I glanced up and saw my dad -and for a split second I thought I caught sight of a proud smile- before he turned around and left us to continue.

Hours later I found myself waiting patiently with Jace outside the study that was connected to the library. I could hear the hushed voices but I ignored it. I only paid attention when Jace pushed the door open -tired of waiting- and caught sight of a man who drove a seraph blade into my father's chest. I screamed as did Jace before the man disappeared but not before I caught sight of a circle on the side of his neck. One of us must've got a message to the Clave because not long after we were surrounded. I walked away, letting Jace deal with the people. I could hear the whispers. We had lost our mother years before, when Jace was born and now we had lost our father too. We were orphans and because no Shadowhunter family wanted us we were sent to New York, to our father's parabatai. Jace and I stayed together. We ignored the Lightwoods for a good month only relying on each other since that's the way it always was.

I still had questions. Why didn't he defend himself? Why did he have to show up to the Manor that day? Like I said we weren't supposed to be orphans. It should've been a normal day.
