Dark Abyss

All the way down
In this dark, dismal abyss,
My eyes capture sunlight
Radiating from above.

The sky surrounds the sun.
It's decorated with clouds
Of all shapes and sizes
You could possibly imagine.

A sensation emerges.
It starts with a tight
Feeling in my chest,
Which spreads all over my body.

My sight begins to blur,
Causing me to collapse
On the ground
With my eyes closed.

A voice enters my ears.
He acts like he has not
Done enough damage
To my precious sanity.

He says I talk a good game,
I will never translate it to actions,
And the outcome will be the same,
So I might as well give up.

All this time,
I wouldn't even bother
Taking my chances to crawl
Out of this hole.

Only this time,
He's in for a big surprise.
As I clench my fist, my fingers
Scrape the dirt below me.

My eyes open.
I stand up.
It is time to make
My dreams come true.

I run to the walls,
And plant my limbs
To the rocky surface,
Clinging for dear life.

I hear the voice
Laugh while I resist
Gravity's attempt to drag me
Back to where I started.

My muscles tear,
Causing me considerable pain,
But I ignore it
As I continue climbing.

Before I know it,
I am almost at the top,
Where I get an up close look
Of what I saw earlier.

The sky looks the same,
Complete with countless clouds,
But this time, I see more:
The very surface.

Densely packed with
Trees, flowers, grasses, and birds,
It is the best
I see during the hour.

I take my final step,
And now, I am free
From this wretched place
I refuse to call home.
