Chapter 14

When Nick and I return home, we've bought an impressive haul—seriously, it's a lot. Despite not feeling hungry, I decide to brush my teeth and change into my favorite pajamas.

I indulge in an episode of "The Umbrella Academy" before drifting off to sleep.

Skipping ahead to the next morning

Ah, Monday—the bane of weekdays. Well, not this Monday, because I have a date planned. As I wake up with Vinnie's arms around me, I realize I've been spending most nights in his bed, especially since Nick is gradually moving into my room. I gently kiss Vinnie's nose before slipping out of bed to find some clothes.

As I'm brushing my teeth, I suddenly feel two arms wrap around me. its Vinnie

Skipping ahead to after school, because let's face it, school is boring

When we finally arrive home, I rush to Vinnie's room for a quick shower before changing into my date outfit.

There's a knock on the door. "What?" I call out. "It's Vinnie, bring a bathing suit," he replies. "Should I put it under my clothes?" I ask. "No, just have it with you," he instructs from outside. I grab a white bathing suit and head downstairs.

When I come downstairs, I find Vinnie staring at me with his mouth slightly agape. "Ready to go?" he asks. "Yeah," I reply, taking his hand.

As we drive, Vinnie keeps his hand on my thigh the entire way. Our first stop is Chick-fil-A. "This date is a little special," Vinnie says as he looks at me. "How so?" I inquire. "Okay, so I have an ending location, but we'll make some stops before we get there. At each stop, we'll play rock, paper, scissors, and the winner gets to choose what we order," Vinnie explains with a smile. "Sounds fun," I say, returning his smile.

At Chick-fil-A, Vinnie wins, and we order Chick-n-Strips. Next, we head to Boa Steakhouse, where Vinnie wins again. Inside, we indulge in a pizza (let's just imagine they serve pizza). Afterward, we swing by McDonald's for ice cream, and I opt for a McFlurry with Smarties, inspired by Chase's favorite last Saturday. I send Chase a picture, and we both share a laugh at his response.

As we make our final stop on the way home, I peer out the window and spot a beautiful beach. "Wanna change into bathing suits and go for a swim?" Vinnie suggests, unbuckling his seatbelt. "Let's do it."

It's the first time he'll see my body in a swimsuit, and it's making me a bit nervous, to be honest.

"Hey, Riley, just tell me if you want me to turn away," Vinnie reassures me as he removes his shirt.

"It's okay, V. Sorry," I apologize instinctively.

"Please don't apologize," he urges gently.

"I know, sorry," I stumble over my words.

"Riley," he interjects, halting my stream of apologies.

"Sorry—I mean, shoot, I'm so sorry—no, darn it," I stumble again.

"It's okay, Riley, but please stop apologizing for nothing," Vinnie pleads.

"I really want to say it," I admit.

"Don't," he insists, before pulling me into a hug. But instead of reciprocating the embrace, he swiftly hoists me over his shoulder and dashes toward the water. "Oh my gosh, Vinnie, no!" I protest through laughter. He gleefully tosses me into the water, and as I surface, I can't help but join in the laughter, chasing after him and eventually leaping onto his back, sending us both splashing into the water.
