 Chapter 8

I was surrounded by five guys. ‘I can’t take them out on my own.’ I panicked. They weren’t armed. ‘Good! Maybe I can outrun them.’ I thought. I need to find an escape. I looked behind me checking for an opening. The two guys shifted on their feet. They must be thinking I’m going to attack. I waited for them to attack but they were observing me. What should I do? I’m only yellow belt in karate! I can barely take out one tough guy on my own let alone five! I gulped and risked to act first. I looked up and said a mini prayer before pretending to attack the guys in front of me. They took a defensive stance while I quickly turned around, ducked and slipped from the little gap between the two bulky dudes that were now in front of me. I began running as soon as I was out the circle made by the five guys. Jumping over the fence, I got deeper in the woods. I was going away from camp area and these guys definitely know the forest more than I do. I need to think of something fast because I could barely see two feet ahead of me. This way they could catch me in no time. After a few minutes, I still hadn’t lost them. If they catch me, they’ll get the necklace. I need to fix it before they find me. The attempt to tighten the necklace while running was not an option. So I took a left and tried running faster. After a few minutes and a few turns, I lost the guys. I halted to a stop before looking around with narrowed eyes. There was no sign of them. Great! I let out a sigh of relief and quickly climbed a tree. Thanking those little pranks we played when we were young. After settling five feet above the ground on a branch which I thought was strong enough to support my body weight, I adjusted the necklace. I tightened enough so that it was surrounding my neckline. Nobody could take it off now and I know they can’t just cut it off. I sighed and looked down, waiting for them to cross this path so I can head back to the camp.

It had been ten minutes and they still haven’t passed this area. ‘Should I get down and try going back to camp?’ I thought. I was scared to get down. What if they catch me? They looked dangerous. What if they find a way to get it off me n then kill me? I gulped. What the hell did I get myself into!

I was so busy thinking about my impending doom that I didn’t realize a boy was standing under the tree I was on. He was facing the other side so I could see his face. He was a thin guy and didn’t look so dangerous from behind. Maybe he was a camper who lost his way. ‘You’re so dead, man!’ I thought.

“Miranda!” he called out in a familiar voice. I strained my eyes to see who it was and right on cue he turned around. Oh no! It was Kevin.

“Miranda, where are you?” he shouted.

‘Oh shut up you idiot! You’re going to get us both killed!’ I thought.

I thought about calling out to him n asking him to come join me on the tree while waiting for those idiots to finally pass this area but before I could react they came to this area. All five of them came from different directions surrounding him. They must have been following him.

“Hey kid, are you lost?” one of the bulky guys said.

“N-No I am… I’m looking for a friend,” Kevin replied.

‘Oh no! Run, you idiot, run!’ I thought.

“Oh, yeah? You want us to help you find her?” he asked while advancing towards Kevin.
