Chapter 16:
I didn’t know if I was hallucinating or Mason was just that fast. He had the three men on the floor in no time and he was coming at Liam. Out of nowhere, he pulled out a revolver and poked my forehead with it while grabbing a fist full of my hair. I hissed in pain making Mason’s posture rigid.
“Let go of her!” Mason shouted.
“I don’t think you are in any position to order me.” Liam smirked.
I couldn’t take the pain any more. The darkness was engulfing me and I was eager to let it. The next thing happened so fast that it took me time to register it (maybe it was due to the blood loss). Mason had picked up the gun from one of the guys he’d just beaten up and shot Liam. I gasped and it drained out all the energy I had, giving in to the darkness.
I woke up in a hospital bed. My head hurt and the place near my collar bone really hurt. I tried to move my hand to touch the space that was causing me so much pain but it felt like the toughest thing to do then. I hissed and my hand dropped back on the bed with a thump leaving me drained of energy. I closed my eyes and that’s when all came rushing to me, my stupid decision to go talk to Max alone and then Liam almost killing me. If Mason hadn’t reached in time, I would have been dead by now. If not due to a proper stab, then maybe cause of the blood loss. I never really got to thank him.
I was so busy in my thoughts that I didn’t hear the door opening or the man coming in.
“How are you feeling now, Ms. Alvares?” Mason spoke. He looked tired like he hadn’t slept in days.
“Much better Mr. Farrell,” I replied with a small smile. The little gesture took most of my energy and I felt drowsy again.
“You should rest. We will talk when you get better.” He began to walk out the door.
“No wait!”
He turned around to look at me, “Yes?”
“What do people know about…this?”
“Well you were walking through the woods when you got attacked by an animal,” he replied with a smirk and left.
Turns out no doubted the story one bit. I didn’t really get punished as my wounds were severe. The camp director thought they were enough punishment for me. The only bad thing that came out of it was that Jane and Savannah hardly left my sight from then. I even got a huge lecture from Jane for not being careful enough (definitely not a good sight!). That woman can seriously turn into a demon when she’s pissed off. I was so relieved when she finished even though I thought my ears would start bleeding before she did. As soon as she was done, I gave her a hug and told her I’d be more careful. She calmed down after that but not enough to leave me by myself throughout my time in the hospital.
I got discharged after a week and was now sitting in my cabin inspecting my wounds. The cuts were stitched tight with the necklace appearing as a tattoo on top of them. For some reason it wouldn’t come out. Maybe it sensed danger in the air that I wasn’t aware of.
“It’ll be out when you get healed,” Mason replied as if reading my thoughts.
“How do you know? And how does it sense all that? And why is it so important? You have to tell me so many things!” I said all in one breathe.
“Look I can give you some answers right now but some aren’t for me to tell. With time you’ll learn those. But I must say you have proven yourself. Showing such resistance at such an age is remarkable. A lot of people give in but you didn’t and I’m proud of you for that. It proves that you are ready to become an official member of our agency. So what do you say? Will you become a part of it?”
My hand instantly went to my neck, touching the wound that still hurt immensely.
“I really am sorry about that but those are the risks you would have to take if you decide to join us.” Mason said as a matter-of-factly.
I wanted to join this agency. I knew I will soon find out all my answers there.
“So which answers can you provide me with?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Well, that necklace is very powerful that’s which is why it’s priceless and it belongs to you,”
That took me by surprise, “Me?”
“Yes, it’s a key to something.”
“What thing?” I enquired with narrowed eyes.
He shook his head, “I can’t tell you that but trust me you will find out soon.”
“You’ve been saying that ever since you contacted me!” I retorted.
“It depends on when he wants to tell you actually. If it was in my hands, I would have told you already but since we have waited so long why not a little while longer?” I could see it that he really wanted me to go with it.
“Who is this he?”
“My boss,” he replied with a smirk. If this guy who knows all about me is his boss, I should be able to confront him sooner.
“Will he be my boss too if I join in?” I asked eagerly earning a chuckle from his side. What was so funny?
“No- I mean yes, yes he will be boss too but you wouldn’t get to meet him till he wants you to.” Great there goes that plan!
“You need to be patient young one,” he said while trying to keep a straight face. I made a face and he couldn’t control anymore and began laughing.
“I want to join in. So when do I start?”
“Tomorrow,” he replied with a grin on his face. I used to think that spies would be very serious but meeting Mason changed that perception. Suddenly what he said sunk in and I frowned.
“What about the camp? What do I tell my parents? Do I even tell my parents?” I bombarded him with questions.
“One question at a time, girl! About the camp, you will be here and continuing the classes while practising with me at night and for your parents… well that is up to you to decide. But they can’t tell anyone, agreed?”
‘Should I tell mum and dad?’ I thought to myself. If I tell them, they would never agree to it. I should just keep things to myself right now. “I think I’ll keep my parents out of it,” I said out loud.
“You sure? It could get complicated. Hiding things from your friends is easier than from your family. It will take a lot of sneaking out and stuff,” he informed me.
“Well a good agent is supposed to be sneaky so all the more practice, yeah?” I grinned.
Jane entered then, “So what’s so funny?” she asked.
“The thought of me becoming an agent,” I replied with a smile.
“Agent? You? Well that sure is funny considering you can’t even take five steps without injuring yourself,” she smirked and I frowned. Mason was clearly enjoying himself.
“Well we’ll see about that. For now, let’s go have lunch!” I exclaimed and began running out the door.
“Hey, wait up!” They both shouted but began running after me.
