                                                CHAPTER 5

I was the last to wake up the next morning. Savannah was sitting in front of the dressing table, brushing her hair.

“Hey, Sleepyhead! How tired were you?”

“I guess a lot!” I said while grinning sheepishly.

“The alarm went off three times before we got up and shut it off.”

“Oops!”

“Hurry up and get ready. You’re getting late.”

I looked at my alarm clock. It was ten to eight. Damn! I quickly got off my bed and grabbed my toiletries. Jane came out on cue and gestured to the bathroom with both hands.

“Here you go! All yours!” she said. I winked at her before closing the door.

While brushing my teeth I noticed something felt different about me. I checked my face. Nah, nothing was different about it just that my eyes were red with sleep and it made my normally hazel eyes look yellowish. I yawned and started scanning myself in the mirror checking for something that seemed different. My curly brown hair were a mess but that’s how they are in the morning. I quickly patted them down and took a few steps back so I could see myself till the waist. Everything seemed normal first but I caught the thing out of place on the second scan. An incisor shaped pendant was hung around my neck by a thick black plastic thread. I frowned and held it between my thumb and index finger to inspect it closely. It had a dragon made on it along with some engraving in an ancient language. I twisted it around to see the back of it and I was shocked. It has three letters on it R, H and S. They were same letters that are on my hand.  I tried to take it off but it wouldn’t go past my nose. It didn’t even have any lock to it either. That is strange. How did it get on me then? Somebody knocked on my door.

“Yeah?” I asked to whoever it was on the door.

“Hurry up, woman! We’re getting late!” it was Jane and she sure sounded impatient.

“Go ahead without me! I’ll join you there!”

“Okay! Hurry up though!”

“I will!”

After a little murmuring, I heard the door close. I rubbed my head. Can this trip get any weirder? I groaned and decided to take a shower before doing something about the stupid necklace. After I was completely ready, I tried to chop it off with scissors but it would even dent the plastic material.

‘Maybe Kevin would know something about it!’ the thought propped into my head. I doubted it right away but it was worth a shot. I began to search for my cell phone but I couldn’t find it. ‘Maybe it’s in one of the drawers of my bedside table?’ and bent on one knee to look in it.

“Gotcha!” I said out loud when I spotted my phone. There was an envelope under it. I took it out. It was addressed to me. I looked out the window to see if someone was there. I could see teenagers rushing here and there but nobody was looking my way. I sighed and opened the envelope. There was a letter in it. It read:

Miranda,

It must be strange to wake up with an unknown piece of jewellery around your neck and weird if you can’t take it off.

My free hand automatically touched the pendant around my neck. I held it in my hand and continued reading.

You must have guessed by now that it’s not just an accessory. The back side of the pendant has the same initials as your hand. The necklace has some connection with you and it can recognise you therefore you’re able to wear it. You must be wondering how I can see them but you might not be too shocked as you have already met someone else who can too. For years you thought that you were delusional but let me assure you, you’re not! A lot of people have those but you hadn’t encountered one before this. You want to know what all those marks mean and how did you get them? If yes, then you need to help me protect the necklace. It may seem ordinary but it’s priceless. Many people are after it! And they are hell dangerous so if you decide to help me you need to know it can cost you your life too. If you don’t want to work for me it’s okay. You have till midnight to decide if you want to work with me. I will put a letter in it by then about how to remove it and then you can put the necklace in the drawer. Please do not tell anybody about this. It’s for your own safety. If I don’t find the necklace in it in the morning I’ll assume you want to work with me. Remember this: IF YOU JOIN THERE IS NO GOING BACK!
