Chapter 10

It was the 18th today. Only ten days till he comes. Ten days left to find out what these marks mean. That was all my brain could process. I was extremely excited about it. I wouldn’t have to stay in the dark anymore but it seemed too easy. Something was wrong. I could feel it. He said it wouldn’t be easy. The guys that were after it are extremely dangerous so how come they attacked just once? Did they send their worst guys after me thinking that I was just a fourteen year old? Something was definitely wrong. But what was it?

“Whatchya thinkin?” Jane asked.

“Nothing. Just missing my mom.”

“Ahan…” She stretched out the word showing me she didn’t believe me.

I pretended to write notes about what the teacher was saying.

“You’ve been so distant since we came here,” she whispered while looking at her notebook, “Is something bothering you?”

“No!” I said immediately.

“Okay. You do know you can tell us anything, right?”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Great! Just wanted to remind you.”

I smiled at her.

Somebody threw a chit at our table from the seat behind. We both looked back to see Savannah frowning at us and pointing at the chit. I opened it. It read:

Wat r u guys talkin abt?

Jane took the piece of paper from me and wrote:

Nothin. Mia misses her mum

She gave it to back and looked at me. I smiled at her showing her I was thankful she didn’t tell her what we were talking about. She gave me her you-owe-me-big-time look and I nodded my head.

They started commuting throughout the class with the chits after that. Jane and Savannah were writing how they miss home and how boring botany was.

I opened my eyes and sat up looking around to see if my roommates were asleep. They were. I quickly wore a hood and put the cabin’s key in its pocket. Tip-toeing my way out, I held the shoes in my left hand and opened the door, keeping the thumb on the door-knob’s lock to stop the clicking sound of the lock. After getting out of it, I breathed out a sigh of relief. It took me a few minutes to reach where I practice now (a place where I think I’m safe from those big ugly dudes). I looked around; making sure no one saw me coming here. I didn’t want a repeat episode of what happened at my previous practicing ground so I kept my senses on high alert throughout practice.

After half an hour’s practice I heard a humming sound. I stopped and paid more attention to it. In my attempt to figure out if it was an animal or a person, I started walking towards the source of the sound. When I neared the area where the sound was coming from I realized it was a person’s voice. I couldn’t understand what he was saying so I advanced further. The voice got clearer and I realized that there were actually two people speaking.  I ducked lower to get cover from the bushes. There was a slight gap between the twigs and I could see their legs. One was pacing around while the other was standing still. The one who was walking was wearing casual jeans and joggers while the one standing wore pants and formal shoes.

“….Are you sure he’s coming on the 28th?” one of them asked. He had a rough, commanding voice.

“Y-yes!” the other person answered. His stammer showed how scared he was of the other guy. “Max told me he’s coming on the 28th to get the necklace from the girl.”
