CHAPTER 15:

Jane and I were walking to our class, talking about random things when she started asking about Max. She asked me why I trusted the guy and hung out with him.

“He gives me the creeps! How can you even hangout with him? He’s weird,” she complained. Well I did agree with her, he did scare me as well but I can’t tell her that now, can I? So instead I asked:

“Why does he scare you?”

“Well for one, he has those tattoos and-”

She was cut off by me. “He has what?” I asked all shocked.

“Tattoos! Oh come one! Don’t tell me you haven’t seen them.”

How come she saw his tattoos and not mine? Something’s really fishy here. I frowned.

“Y-you can see those tattoos but not the ones on Mason or Kevin?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Never mind,” I replied. If she can see his marks but not ours does it mean Mason’s the real one and Max just coincidently came later? So my instincts were right! I smiled.

“Why are you smiling?” Jane asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Uh nothing. Let’s go to class,” I brushed her question off and headed to class with her.

After lunch, I went to go meet Max as promised. I wanted to see what he had to say. He was convinced that I believed he was the one who gave me the necklace. It would be nice to see his reaction when I tell him I already know he’s faking it. Something in my pit told me to tell someone where I was going but I ignored it and continued.

“Hey!” I said when I saw him waiting for me. I was there a couple minutes early. The lunch time wasn’t over yet but I couldn’t wait.

“You’re early,” he stated. He seemed agitated.

“Yeah, I was curious to know what you had to tell me.”

He looked at his watch and then replied, “I just wanted to warn you to stay away from Mason. He’s bad news,” I nodded to that. Was that all?

“And also to introduce you to someone who can tell you about your marks.” He added after a short pause, nodding to himself.

“Weren’t you supposed to tell me about that?”

“I was. But this guy knows about your past much better than I do so it would be less confusing then,” he replied with a smug smile. Wow! Talk about a mood swing!

I simply nodded at that. After a couple of minutes a man emerged from the trees. He was a buffed up guy. He must be at least six feet. He had brown hair and a tanned skin. For some reason I instantly knew he meant danger. I gulped and tried to back away. I should have told someone I was coming this way. Damn you, creepy gut feeling!

“Hey, Miranda,” the man replied with a thick accent.

“Umm… hi.” I waved my hand at him while trying to avoid eye contact with him.

“Can I please have the necklace?” he asked.

“What?”

Before I could process anything further, something hit the back of my head, hard. I could feel the blood coming out. I touched it with my right hand and my assumption was confirmed when I saw red sticky liquid covering my fingers. Dizziness soon consumed me and I fell to the ground.

The only thing I could feel was that my head was throbbing. I still had my eyes shut and I didn’t have the energy to open them. I tried to bring my hands to my head to hold it but I couldn’t. Something restricted my movement. I tried to open my eyes only to close them again due to the light. I tried to open them again and adjust to the bright light coming from the side of the room. Wait, where am I? The thing I remember is I was in the woods and I got hit. Oh boy! I’m in big trouble. I knew I couldn’t trust Max. I should have gone with my gut feeling and left when I had the chance.

I was in a standing position, my back being supported by what felt like a pillar. My hands were tied behind my back and my legs were tied to the pillar. I could only move my head.

“So how about the necklace now?” an unfamiliar voice came from the left side of the room. I snapped my head in its direction only to get my vision blurred from the bulb near my face. I blinked a few times, trying to adjust to the bright light.

It was the same guy I met in the woods accompanied by Max who was standing in the right corner and two of the buffed guys I got into a fight with the other day standing by the door. They all seemed alert. Like waiting for something bad to happen.

“I guess, I haven’t introduced myself properly. I’m Liam. Nice to meet you, Miranda,” the thick accented guy replied. He was smiling like the Cheshire cat and I felt scared. He felt like the kind of guy who could break me like a twig within seconds.  I frowned and waited for him to say something more.

“So can I take the necklace now?” he asked but before I could answer he tried to snatch it off me.

I smirked when I saw his futile attempts to try to snatch it off me. I received a slap to my face when he noticed my smirk and I winced. Man he’s got a strong arm. I hissed when I tasted the blood coming out of my lip but I tried to regain control over my emotions. I can’t let him see my weakness.

He then shouted something in a foreign language and one of the buffed up guys went outside the room. He came back within a couple of minutes with a Knife and I gulped. That’s what he asked for? Oh man, I’m dead! Liam then tried to cut off the necklace and I felt relieved when he didn’t use it on me. I soon heard a round of gasps from the room. They were all looking at me with weird looks. ‘What got up their pants?’ I thought. It was quickly answered when I saw the necklace penetrated in my skin. It looked like a tattoo and I smiled. Their reaction was similar to the one I had when I saw it happening for the first time.

“Tell me how to get it off!” Liam shouted at my face, getting spit all over my face. DISGUSTING!

“Uh back up a notch dude. You are getting spit all over me,” I retorted.

That hit a nerve as I saw his already pissed off expression becoming angrier. He then grabbed me by hair and pulled, making me wince because of the pain. He then brought the knife to my neck and started carving round the edge of the necklace. The pain was getting unbearable and I felt disgusted with my sweat and blood dripping down my body. It almost made me want to give up and tell him how to get it off of me. But I had to stay strong. Mason warned me in his messages that they were dangerous people and I had agreed to help him. If I give it to them, who knows what they will do with it? I had a feeling it was much more useful then gaining them loads of cash.

The knife started penetrating deep into my flesh making a fresh wave of blood stream out. I screamed in agony and I couldn’t take it anymore. I began crying from all the pain and I felt dizzy.

“Just tell me how to get it off and I will make the pain go away,” he offered and it felt such a nice offer at the moment. I would have replied to him if I could talk at the moment but I felt thankful to the pain as it stopped me from giving them what they wanted.

Black patches covered my vision and I wanted to just sleep. I wished this pain would go away. It was killing me and he kept penetrating the knife into my skin, hoping I would give up. After a few seconds that seemed like a lifetime, gunshots were heard. It was like a life saver as he stopped stabbing me with it and went to look where the sound came from. I was glad I was tied up as I would have fell to the ground as he left me. Just then I heard a door slam and in came Mason. He looked so angry, I felt bad for the one who just hurt me.

Then the fighting began…
