Chapter 7
You know that feeling you get that you’re being watched but you can’t find the person who is watching you? Well I felt that. A week had passed and I hadn’t gotten in any text from M or gotten any trouble but I felt like I was being watched. Every single minute of the day I felt that. It was driving me crazy! Was it because I thought M must be monitoring me? But why monitor me instead of taking care of it himself if he was staying here? Surely he couldn’t believe that I can protect it more than he can, then who is it making me feel twitchy? Could it be the people he was talking about in the letters? I looked around to see if I could spot the eyes that are making me uncomfortable. Nothing! Again I can’t find those eyes! It has been like this throughout the week! I think someone is watching me but when I look around I can’t spot them! Maybe I’m just being paranoid?
“What are you thinking about?” Kevin asked. He still sits with us in the cafeteria. He was frowning at me, probably trying to figure out on his own about what I was thinking.
Should I tell him? Maybe he can help me? I mean he is the only one I’ve met who can see these marks. Probably he’s seen something like the necklace I’m wearing and has some information? Or will I just be endangering his life? As these questions running in my mind, Kevin raised his eyebrow at me, reminding me that I still haven’t answered his question. “Oh nothing really,” I replied to his impatient self.
He narrowed his eyes at me and said, “Doesn’t seem like nothing. You’ve been twitchy all week.”
I frowned and said, “You met me a week ago! How would u know if I’m being twitchy or am just like that?” My tone came out harsher than I’d wanted but that would tell him to back off.
He didn’t seem offended by the tone and replied, “You weren’t like that the first two days I met you.” Our conversation brought Savannah and Jane’s attention to us and they were giving me the look. “You’ve known him only for a week?” Jane asked with narrowed eye while Savannah raised an eyebrow at me. Oh shit!
I gulped and replied, “Umm no he is umm met me after so long! He shifted when I was little right so we met after so long that’s why I said that!” I bit on my lip n waited for them to buy it. They had incredulous looks on their face but I guess they were ready to drop it as their expression changed and Savannah asked, “He is right, you know. You have been twitchy.”
“See!” Kevin exclaimed!
I chuckled and was tempted to tell them what was bothering me but it might put their lives at risk. I haven’t been attacked yet but I have a feeling I might be soon. I decided to tell them a little bit of the truth.
“Well remember the day I went for a run and got lost?” they nodded their heads. “Yeah well I couldn’t find my way back and these two bulky guys came out of nowhere. When they saw me I thought I might get attacked but they asked why I am alone here and then helped me find my way back here. They said that they are letting me off the hook but if I get lost again they won’t be so helpful.”
“Oh! So they like threatened you after helping you?” Savannah asked
“Yup!”
“They must be just trying to warn you to stay out of it. I mean the botany teacher tells us each day about how dangerous it is in the forest anyway, right?” Kevin suggested.
“Maybe or maybe they were just trying to look tough! You know how boys are!” Jane said.
“Heyyyyy!” Kevin whined which made us all chuckle. The mood got light after that and I tried not to be so twitchy around them the whole day.
I opened my eyes and checked on my roommates. They were fast asleep. Good! Now I can sneak out easily. I wore my shoes, took the keys to the cabin and tip toed my way out. I stopped near the boundary marking the camp area and started practicing. It was after midnight and everyone was asleep. I come here to practice what we learn that day in Taekwondo classes. This way I prepare myself for a fight. I had managed to get yellow belt already but I wasn’t alone two others had gotten it too. One of them was Kevin. We are usually paired up to fight in class and he earned the belt a day before I did. I started punching and kicked a few low braches of the tree near me. After a half an hour of practice I finally started heading to my cabin when I heard a twig snap. I stopped in my tracks but didn’t turn around. I heard another twig being snapped and some hushed voices. I turned around to look at the low fence which marked the camp area. Anybody could jump over it. That’s how I got out of the area without noticing. Personally I think it’s useless because it doesn’t provide any kind of security to the ground. I gulped and narrowed my eyes to be able to see in this dark. I couldn’t see anything so I turned around and thought of running while I could. But just as I did five guys jumped out and spread around me. Oh shit! I gulped again before getting in a fighting stance. Here goes nothing!
