CHAPTER 13:

My mom called in the evening to wish me. She got a bit emotional when she mentioned that it was my first birthday without her near me and she missed me. I told her I missed her too and how badly I wanted to go home. We talked for a little while and then she gave the phone to dad who kept asking me if things were okay and whether someone was bugging me, the typical ‘dad’ things. I really did miss home. Things used to be so simple there. My life wasn’t in danger twenty-four/seven but I’d never met anyone with the marks before and now I was at camp with two of them. Was all the trouble worth it? All this danger, the sleepless nights, the practice, was it worth knowing what those symbols meant? “Yes,” said the voice in my head, “It’s better to know than rather than staying in the dark.”

Okay I don’t know about you guys but sometimes that voice in my head is creepy. It is usually right though. If I didn’t listen to it, I ended up regretting it mostly so I went with it and suppressed those thoughts. I was already in it so let’s complete it, right?

“Hey Miranda want to grab some lunch?” Savannah said peeking through the cabin door.

“Sure!” I exclaimed while getting up from my bed.

When we entered the cafeteria, I saw Mason from the corner of my eye. He made a little hand gesture for me to come and sit with him. I nodded and turned to Savannah after filling my tray with food. “Hey umm… I need to discuss something with the new guy. See you in a bit?” she looked like she was about to say something but then she shut her mouth and nodded before leaving to go sit with Jane. I really need to apologize to both of them for avoiding them so much. The whole purpose of this camp was for us to spend the summer together and I have been so distant with all the recent drama in my life. I sometimes wished I could tell them all that was going on but it might put their lives in risk too and I don’t want that for my friends. I made a promise to myself to apologize and make up for all that slacking once all of this necklace drama has been sorted out.

“So we are going to start training from today, got it?” Mason said as soon as I sat down at his table.

“Training?” I asked while scowling at my food.

“Yeah, you need to train to be able to take those guys out. Otherwise you’ll be dead in no time.”

“Thanks for the confidence boost.” I replied sarcastically.

“We’re going to start tonight after 11. ’Kay?” he ordered to which I just nodded my head as a reply.

He was going to train me. Why? Does he really want me to beat his people up? Wouldn’t it be convenient for them if I’m not able to hurt them? Not that I think I’m completely useless. I could take out most of the students in my class easily so I could harm those big dummies. But why is he trying so hard to gain my trust?

“Is everything alright?” he inquired.

“Yeah… was just thinking about those dummies.”

“Don’t underestimate them. They haven’t struck as yet but they soon will so we need to be prepared.”

“I know,” I replied with a sigh.

“You know what?” a familiar voice asked from behind me.

I turned around to see Kevin looking a bit pissed. What happened to him and where was he yesterday?

I raised an eyebrow. Silently asking him what he wants.

“So what are you doing here with the new kid?” he asked, completely ignoring my irritated look.

I was about to answer him that it was none of his business but Mason spoke before me.

“We were talking about the mark on our arms. The one you have too,” he said with a smirk plastered on his face.
