"What the hell was that L?" (Y/n) nearly screamed once they were seated in the limo headed back to the hotel, "You were acting possessive and weird back there. I mean, it wouldn't be such a huge deal if you hadn't acted out in front of Light. What if you get killed for your absurd behavior? What happens then?"

"You never mentioned that you knew Light, (Y/n)," L mumbled, completely ignoring the girl's concerns. He gnawed on the nail on his thumb out of nervous habit, awaiting her response.

"I didn't feel I needed to."

At this point, (Y/n) was pissed at the detective. Sure, she had kept some stuff to herself but in her mind, there was no reason she had to reveal her relationship with the suspect. Even if he was found guilty, she wasn't connected in that way; they were friends, not accomplices.

"You do realize that he is our prime suspect, don't you (Y/n)? We can't afford to ignore anyone who has ties with a potential criminal; you could be working with him for all I know. Perhaps trying to get closer to me so he can find out my identity and kill me on the spot. Perhaps you kept this from me because you are, in fact, a double agent."

"Bullshit."

"Excuse me?"

"I said this is bullshit. You told me I was cleared that first night we met in the hotel, after the interview. You told me again when the whole security camera fiasco happened. Why don't you trust me, L?"

"Damn it, (Y/n), don't you get it? I do trust you, but I don't trust Light. I know for certain that man is Kira and I don't want him using you to get what he wants. I don't want him manipulating you for my name and killing you after. Me, I don't care about but you, you're special to me, and I can't have anything bad happen to you, do you understand me? Nothing is allowed to happen."

"And why is it that all of a sudden you give a shit about what happens to me, huh? A few minutes ago I was certain that if it came down to it, you'd sacrifice me to successfully catch Kira."

"Because I fucking love you, (Y/n)."

"L--"

"I have been trying to figure out what this feeling was for weeks. I figured at first I was just amused with you; you kept me entertained because I never knew what was going on in your head or what you were going to say next. I figured that maybe you were here to amuse me. To keep me wondering. But eventually, I settled on the term friend, because I felt some sort of connection with you. Something I hadn't felt with anyone other than Watari. After a while, however, I realized there was something different between the two connections, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

"I didn't understand what made you so different. Maybe I'm selfish, but I felt that the reason you were different from Watari was that with you, I wanted something more. With you, I feel less alone. I feel at peace for once in my crazy life. From the moment I wake up to the moment I fall asleep, you're the only thing on my mind, darling, and that's not something that just happens. Hell, you're the one who got me to sleep in the first place."

The words that spilled out of the detective's mouth made so much more sense to (Y/n) now: the reason he insisted on sharing a hotel room, the reason he wanted a friendship with her, the reason he was acting protective in front of Light. It was all because he had feelings for her, and the worst part about it was that she liked it.

"So, you were jealous when Light grabbed my hand, weren't you? That's why you got all weird." she teased.

The detective sighed, then nodded ever so slightly. "Shut it," he mumbled, crossing his arms and glanced downward. A slight, pink hue draped his face, indicating to her that he was embarrassed.
