One Wrong Move (L Lawliet x Reader)

Chapter 24

"And now, a shocking announcement," the broadcaster's voice boomed from the television; the morning had finally come where they could see the results of the recording Light had created "in response to the frightening Kira video aired on Sakura TV only a few days ago, an anonymous individual has contacted us claiming to be the real Kira. In short, he has demanded of this network, as well as several others, that we air the message you are now about to see.

"I would also like to mention that the NPA has granted us permission to air this video. Is this the real Kira? No one knows for sure. But we can only hope this video will provide us with some much-needed answers."

The men of the task force, alongside L, Light, and (Y/n), were all gathered around the flat screen in the living room of L's suite, watching the message play out live on the news channel. (Y/n) glanced at the detective sitting to the right of her, noticing that he was gnawing on his fingernail anxiously. He wasn't the only one who was anxious, however, as she saw the others fidgeting with their hands and shifting about.

"Hey, (Y/n), can--" Matsuda began to speak before being interrupted by Light.

"Shush, Matsuda, they're about to play the message," he muttered angrily.

"I am Kira," the television boomed, "The true Kira. The one who was broadcast on Sakura TV several days ago is a pretender, a fake. The purpose of this message is to communicate my will to this imposter. I have chosen to be lenient with him for the time being only because I believe he wishes to cooperate with me in the creation of a new world. But I will make it absolutely clear that the taking of innocent lives is against my will.

"If this person claiming to be me is truly sympathetic to my cause and wishes to be of some help, I ask two things of him. That he refrains from killing aimlessly, and that he agrees to abide by my basic principles. Failure to agree to these rules, and I will not hesitate to kill him myself."

"Well done, Light. That sounded truly convincing, almost as if you were Kira himself," L mumbled, looking over (Y/n)'s shoulder to make eye contact with the brunette boy. He disliked that he was perched so close to the girl, but he knew there was nothing he could do or say to prevent it. It was a lost cause to the detective, at least for right now; he couldn't blow their cover.

(Y/n) heard the sleep-deprived mumbles of the detective across the room as he began to fumble with his laptop, aggressively tapping the keys. L's laptop emitted two beeps before Warari's voice boomed out of the speakers. "Ryuzaki, we have a reply from the second Kira."

"What?" Soichiro exclaimed as the rest of the detectives shot up from their seats in disbelief.

"I will be bringing over the envelope and tape that we received, but in the meantime, I'm streaming a copy of the video so you can view it on your end," Watari continued before the screen swapped from the letter W to the name Kira.

"Kira, thank you for your reply," a distorted recording spoke, "please do not worry. I will follow orders and do as you say."

"Woah," Matsuda gasped, "it worked!"

(Y/n) glanced out of the corner of her eye and noticed Light standing with a blank expression on his face; having been his friend for a while, however, she knew his mind was racing and he was most likely analyzing the video. If she were Light, what would she be thinking?

Who is out there with the same intent as me?

Are they just a copycat, or will they be a useful asset?

Does this Kira know what he's doing?

There are hundreds of potential questions Light could be asking himself right now, yet he continued to do so without exposing what he was doing; he didn't even slip up for a single second. (Y/n) shifted her gaze to the boy hunched over the computer, who appeared to also be lost in thought. For two individuals on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, they had a lot of the same mannerisms.
