Chapter 25

(Y/n), L, and Soichiro sat in the dimly lit room of the hotel, surrounded by piles of papers and folders; these scraps of paper seemed meaningless compared to what Mr. Yagami was clutching in his hands. A message from the second Kira had just arrived, and their eyes were glued to the journal and the tape they had intercepted right before it arrived at Sakura TV.

"I can't make sense of it," (Y/n) mumbled to herself as she peered over Mr. Yagami's shoulder at the journal, "this was from a year ago, so why send it now?"

"That may be so, Miss (L/n)," L muttered, "but we can assume that this second Kira believes that by sending this journal under last year's dates he can fly under the radar and make us believe that it's already happened when in reality it hasn't."

The detective rose out of his seat and meandered to the kitchen, returning with a handful of cookies.

"Want one?" he stretched his arm out to the girl, cookie in hand, "they're snickerdoodle."

(Y/n) took one and nodded in appreciation, Soichiro doing the same as he was offered one as well.

"Looking at this entry, we could assume that on the 30th is when they plan to meet," (Y/n) mumbled, her mouth full of cookies, "it makes mention that they confirmed their shinigami at the Tokyo dome, but that's too obvious, isn't it? I mean, an idiot could figure that out. It has to be something else."

She scanned the page for other clues and noticed an entry made on the 22nd: My friend and I showed off our notebooks in Aoyama. Light mentioned to the girl that he picked up some sort of death notebook that granted him his so-called "power." It couldn't be a coincidence that Light told her about his notebook and it's getting mentioned once again.

That must mean there's more than one notebook.

The May 30th entry seemed entirely too obvious to be the real message; it had to be this entry. There was no doubt in her mind that it was that one. She had to find a way to lead them toward that entry without revealing too much; she needed to make sure she didn't put L or anyone else in the task force in danger. After all, Light didn't hesitate once to threaten to kill the (Y/n), so she doubted he would hesitate when it came to his father. If (Y/n) had too loose of lips, the whole task force could be doomed.

"What about that one? It seems a bit odd, right?" the girl said, pointing to the entry made on the 22nd, "I mean, what normal person decides 'Hey! let's meet up and show each other our totally awesome notebooks!' it's just weird, no regular person finds a notebook that interesting."

"Perhaps the notebook is a metaphor. Maybe 'showing our notebooks' really means 'showing how we kill.'" The detective added, "This is good, (Y/n), we can work with this."

Mr. Yagami looked at L and nodded, "It's entirely plausible. I think it's time we tell Light, don't you?"

"Yes, you can tell him," L replied, "but don't explain what's in the journal quite yet, I would like to see his analysis."

Soichiro nodded again and began to dial Light's number, "Light, there's another message from the second Kira. It was sent to Sakura TV and we intercepted it. I'm told it's a video and a journal this time. Anyway, I figured I should tell you."

"Alright Dad, I'm on my way," Light's voice crackled from the other end.

"Please, come in," L mumbled to the detective's son, "and please look at this."

Light picked up the journal and stared intently at it, a mixture of curiosity and unease in his eyes. He began to analyze its contents, poring over the words written in search of clues that could help him find out who this second Kira is or at least where they wanted to meet.

Light couldn't shake the feeling he was being watched. In fact, he knew he was being watched. L was always watching and he was waiting for him to slip up.

As (Y/n) observed the brunette boy, she couldn't help but notice his intense concentration as his eyes flitted across the page. She held her breath, hoping that he wouldn't catch the line about the notebooks, but she knew that Light was too sharp to miss something like that.

"So, what do you think? Is it real?" L asked the boy, maintaining eye contact.

"Well, from this point in time, all I can say is he sure must be stupid," Light responded.

"Yeah, I agree," Matsuda chimed in, "I mean it's completely obvious he wants to meet Kira at the home game."

"Doesn't he understand what would happen if we aired this message?" Mr. Yagami posited, "It would create an immediate panic and the game would have to be canceled."

"To be honest, it's so stupid," L continued, eating a bite of cookie, "I'm not even sure how to deal with this whole situation anymore. If we make the diary public, then we'll be forced to make some kind of televised announcement canceling the game on the 30th. But if we don't broadcast it, we can be sure that the second Kira won't do anything."

"Won't canceling the game make him angry?" Matsuda asked the detective, "There's no telling what he'll do."

"Frankly that's not a big concern. From what we've witnessed, it's safe to say the second Kira admires the real one. He gave his word to the Kira we invented that he'd refrain from killing aimlessly. I'm inclined to believe that,

"I say we make it public and we air an announcement canceling the game. At the same time, we'll announce that on May 30th we're going to set up checkpoints on all roads leading to the Tokyo Dome. And finally, we'll send a response from our invented Kira, something like, 'I understand and I agree to meet you there.'"

The young detective stretched his arm out and grabbed his cup of tea, sipping it as he awaited a response.

"Ryuzaki, you don't honestly expect him to go there if we set up checkpoints around the Dome, do you?" Soichiro asked the ebony-haired boy who was still happily sipping his tea.

"I don't think that Kira would even consider it," he answered, "but it's possible the other one might. It all depends on how stupid he really is. However, assuming he is not actually the idiot we think he is, there could be another message hidden in this diary, one that's not so obvious."

L glanced over at (Y/n), a faint smile played on the corners of his mouth as his onyx eyes locked with hers. (Y/n) could feel her heart race as his gaze met hers; he was incredibly thankful to the girl for providing him with her valuable insight on the journal.

As L continued to look at her, she couldn't help but feel a bit nervous, much like the sensation a schoolgirl feels when she has her first crush. In this case, it was similar and though the two were seeing each other in secret, it was difficult to hold these feelings back from everyone else in the room.

There was a softness in his expression that she had never seen before, and she could have sworn that she saw a flicker of emotion in his eyes, almost like he was feeling the same way she was. L's gaze lingered on her for a moment longer before he looked away. What felt like an eternity was only a split second

"If there's a message here written in some code that only people with this Shinigami power can understand, there would be no way for me to decipher it. Still, it would only make sense for us to look into all of the places that were mentioned in the journal,

"Uh, 22nd, he's meeting a friend in Aoyama. On the 24th, another friend in Shibuya. We have to be prepared for the possibility that all of our efforts will be fruitless. Let's keep an eye out for people with notebooks in Aoyama, and people in clothing stores in Shibuya,

"All we can do is place more surveillance cameras in Aoyama and Shibuya in the hopes that we might capture something. We should also arrange to have undercover officers in both locations on these dates."

"I should probably go to Aoyama and Shibuya since I blend in with the crowd there, you know," Matsuda responded.

"I'll go too," Light added, "and I'll take (Y/n) with me."
