That same night, early hours of the morning, I was woke by a scratching noise at the front door. Was it a cat? It didn't sound like the scratching of nails, more like metal.

I was familiar with that sound. That was the sound of someone trying to break into my house. My heart began thumping in my chest, to an unsteady rhythm. I turned over, to see Bucky sprawled out on the bed, deep in sleep.

I shook him, multiple times, but he wouldn't wake. The sound was growing louder, as the possible intruders began to struggle. It was highly unlikely they would get in, not after the dozen locks Bucky put on the door (literally).

I pulled on a single strand of Bucky's hair, not enough to hurt him, but as I did, he woke.

"What?" He asked, one eye staring at me.

"Listen," I pointed to the door and said nothing as the scratching continued.

I felt Bucky's eyes meet mine, "Stay here," he said, softly, lifting himself out of bed and using his hands to search for his clothes.

"What? No," I hissed quietly, "I am coming with you!"

"Y/N, don't argue with me, please?" He hauled his trousers over his naked self, "I'll be back in a second."

And with that, he left the room. I sat in bed, holding the duvet to my chest to cover myself, but also to keep myself warm. Even though the apartment was warm in the day, it always seemed to grow cold in the evenings.

I thought for a moment, and decided that for once, I wouldn't listen to Bucky. I used my foot to search the floor for my nightgown, but instead found Bucky's t-shirt. It would do. I also decided it best to put on some underwear.

Slowly, I crept out the bedroom and looked around the hall. The scratching had stopped. My house was silent again. I proceeded down the hall, though, nonetheless.

And to my surprise, I found Bucky standing at the door, holding a knife, as he unlocked the multiple locks.

He heard my footsteps and turned, scared. He mouthed something to me, but I didn't quite make it out, and shrugged.

He walked over to me, "I told you to stay in the..."

But he didn't have time to finish. Our door was broken down by the foot of a tall, muscular man. His face was hidden behind a khaki green mask, but overall he seemed unfamiliar.

But then, I saw someone I recognised. From behind him, followed three men. One of which, I had an encounter with only weeks before – the "plumber".

Bucky stepped in front of me, but instead of allowing it, I moved from around him and stood at his side. He held the knife in front of him, facing the intruders.

My heart sunk after what I saw next. He took a single step through the door and all the men moved to the side, giving him a clear pathway into the house. All my nights worrying and thinking of him finding me, had become a reality, as Pierce stood in front of me.
