A few days passed, and Bucky was out a work. I heard a knock on the door. We didn't know anyone, so I grew anxious. I slowly crept towards the door, to try not to show that anyone was home. I peered through the small glass window to see a bulky, middle-aged man, standing with a notepad.
I watched him for a moment, inspecting his every move, suspicious. I was nervous. But despite that, I opened the door, and smiled.
"Hi," I said.
"Hello. We've had complaints of noise coming from this apartment recently," the man spoke.
"Oh, I'm sorry. We'll try to keep it down," I smiled.
"Thank you. Also, there's a burst pipe somewhere in the building, mind if I come in to check yours?" he asked, looking at me with intense eyes.
I inspected his body language and sensed his muscles were tight and his mind wasn't at ease. It was easy to read a person, just by their face. He seemed suspicious, and looked nothing at all like a plumber.
"My husband checked ours yesterday, the neighbours were worried," I lied, "Ours are fine, I wouldn't want you wasting your time."
"Ah, well thank you, darling, have a nice day," the man smiled, before moving to the next apartment.
I carefully closed the door, and stood with my back against it. I took a sigh of relief, until there was another knock, this time louder, with more aggression.
What if he worked for HYDRA? What if what I thought I sensed, was something different? Instead of him being tense, he was violent. I could picture his eyes in my mind, and I saw that hidden anger, concealed with a supposed innocence.
Instead of answering, I locked the chain and ran to the bathroom. I tried the window but it was jammed. So I rushed along the hall to the bedroom and opened the window. Three stories didn't seem much at the time, but it was a lot worse than I thought.
I didn't have any plans to kill myself, or injure myself. I had done jumps higher than this plenty of times, only then I had my suit to protect me. I thought about the risk of fighting the man : what if I were to lose and he kidnap me – return me to HYDRA?
It was a risk I wasn't willing to take. I had already worried Bucky sick that week and wasn't going to do it twice. I knew if they had any intentions on taking me, it would be for no reason but to lure in Bucky. And he needed to stay away from HYDRA and so did I. A few broken bones were nothing, compared to HYDRA.
I stood on the ledge, and caught the attention of a lot of people on the ground. I heard the knock again and flung myself out the window. As I fell, I realised it was a lot longer to the bottom than I had thought, which didn't exactly calm my nerves.
I thought about what would happen. The last words I said to Bucky ; had I told him I loved him? Until, I hit the floor. My mind went blank of everything, and pain consumed my thoughts.
I saw blurry figures of people surrounding me, asking me questions I couldn't comprehend. That was, until, I heard Bucky's voice.
"Move!" he yelled, presumably pushing his way through the crowd.
I felt him take my hand, and kneel at my side, "Baby?" he asked.
I groaned in a response, letting him know I was awake – or even alive.
"Someone get help!" he yelled to the people, "It's okay, doll, you're okay."
"It... hurts B...Bucky..." I stuttered, squeezing his hand. It did hurt. My back throbbed and my spine ached. I didn't intend on landing on my back. It didn't feel sore enough to be broken, but it was sure as hell bruised to the bone.
"I know, just stay with me, okay? Where's that help?!" Bucky comforted me.
"Five minutes," I heard another voice say, "Is she okay?"
Bucky ignored her, and turned back to me, "You hear that? Help is coming, I just need you to keep your eyes open, on me and stay awake, can you do that?"
"I'm... tired..." I gulped.
"I know, doll, but you've got to keep your eyes open, okay? Don't go to sleep," Bucky repeated.
I felt my eyes growing heavy and my mouth going dry. I couldn't feel my legs. I wanted to reach for them, just to check they were still there. I was a person who often seeked reassurance in any situation. But I couldn't move.
"My... legs," I spoke.
"What about them?" Bucky asked.
"I can't... f...feel them..." I managed to say.
I knew that this scared Bucky, but for me, he stayed calm, "It's okay, don't focus on that, just on staying awake."
But I couldn't – my eyes began to feel droopy and everything started to go blurry again. Voices began to go muffled, like a bad TV signal.
Before I fell unconscious, I remembered the sirens ; they rang through my ears and hurt my head, if it wasn't bad already.
I woke up again, in a different environment, but Bucky still held my hand. I was in a hospital bed. I was weak, but managed to look over to my side and see Bucky sleeping in the chair beside me.
It was late at night, and the moon light shone through the blinds of the room's window. It lit up Bucky's face and I could see that he had been crying. His eyes were puffy and his cheeks were a blotchy red.
I groaned as I tried to move into a more comfortable position, but I accidentally woke him.
"Shh, go back to sleep..." I said softly.
"You're okay?" He replied, sleepily.
I showed him a faint smile, "As good as I can get, considering."
"What the hell were you thinking? Was it a suicide attempt?" He asked, sitting up.
"What? No!" I exclaimed, sitting up and hurting my shoulder. I closed my eyes, in pain as I rested back, "No..."
"So then what?" Bucky asked me, stroking my hand.
"There was a man..." I began.
Bucky's eyes widened, "What man?"
"Hold on. He came to the door saying people complained about the noise, then said he needed to check the pipes. He seemed sketchy, so I told him you checked them after the neighbours told you about the problem. And then he came back, knocking aggressively, I got scared..." I held back tears, gulping.
Bucky saw how emotional I was, "It's okay, doll. I'm here. You couldn't have just pulled a kitchen knife?"
"I didn't want to risk being caught, if I couldn't have fought them off," I explained.
Bucky lifted my hand and kissed it softly, "I was so scared..."
"Me too actually," I laughed slightly, before coughing.
"Careful," Bucky said quietly.
"Ah, she's awake," A nurse interrupted, "How are you feeling, Mrs Slater?"
"Uh... okay, I suppose," I turned to Bucky, who shot me a look to be quiet.
"Good. You suffered quite the fall," she smiled.
"Yeah, I know," I tried to smile back, but it seemed too much effort.
She looked at her clipboard, then me, "Well we don't have much reason to keep you here. You can stay for the remainder of the night, and we can prescribe some antibiotics in the morning, for the shoulder."
I hadn't even noticed my arm, wrapped in a sling, "Is it broken?" I asked.
"No, just dislocated. I have to admit, I have never seen someone so lucky in your position, Mrs Slater, you should be thanking God you're alive," she smiled, before exiting.
I rested back, and closed my eyes, "What have I done?"
"Nothing, doll. You're okay, and that's what matters," He smiled to me and I gave him a faint smile in response, before closing my eyes again and falling asleep.
