"Hey... Minzy. Hey ... hey,"
I heard someone calling my name. I just realized that the person's hands were on my shoulders, shaking me profusely. I came back to reality immediately. Kai looked terribly worried in front of me.
"Are you okay?" asked Kai.
I shook my head and broke into tears. I let myself to cry for the first time since my parents were gone. Maybe it was because of what had happened today was too much for me to handle. How many times I tried to run away from the pain that haunted me like a hunter hunting for a deer, only to end up in the end of a u-turn. Or maybe it was because that I remembered my childhood too well, why I always spent my birthday being locked in my bedroom, being engulfed in the darkness just because my mom hate the day I was born. Then came that guy who promised to love me till the end of his life, but it was a pretty lie. At the end, everyone I loved and cherished left me alone to live my life with the pain they had caused. I couldn't express my hatred towards them with words anymore.
Kai gently slid his arms around me, bringing me some soothing warmth. I finally felt safe. He brushed my hair, ensuring me that everything was gonna be okay. Without words and only my tears, we let the moment passed. I wasn't aware of what happened around me. Slowly, I regained what was left in my heart, my strength to hold all the pain and stop myself from crying. I wiped my last tears and pulled away from Kai's warm embrace.
"Minzy, what happened?"
I couldn't bring myself to tell him about that dark side of me. The pathetic side of me. "Uh... Nothing. It was just..." I was an expert at hiding feeling. "I was homesick. I missed home. I missed my brother... and this is my first time to spend my birthday alone," I lied.
"Oh!!! Today is your birthday," said Kai.
His eyes widen and shock was written all over his face. Somehow I found him look cute.
I chuckled, "SURPRISE?" It seemed fake in my ears. But hell, I didn't care anymore.
"Happy birthday, Minzy," greeted Kai while helping me to get up. Once I stood on my own feet, I saw some girls throwing their laser stares on me. If those stares could kill, i probably wouldn't survive any minute standing this close to Kai.
"Are you sure you are okay?"
I nodded. Telling lies was like a piece of cake to me.
"So here's the deal. Give me your key. I will carry all your boxes. And you... you go to your room. Take some rest. Then I will take you to a party!"
"Party?"
"Yes... Party. A welcoming party for freshmen. Not an official party though, but it is a must for every freshmen to attend. So you have no choice. Don't worry. We are going to spend it like your birthday party," Kai winked.
"Okay," I replied half heartedly. Actually I had no intent to go, but it seemed to be rude after what Kai had done for me. Like I never gone to any party. I will just blend in and hopefully nobody will notice me.
Kai took my keys. He shove me away when I insisted to help. Kai said his grandmother will punish him if she knew he treated a lady badly. That made me smile. I ignored all the whispers around me when I walked to my room. Maybe Kai wasn't that bad. I was totally going to give him a chance.
