Hoshiko and Naruto stopped at the base of the tree Naruto had pinpointed.

"Stand back," Hoshiko said, then hurled a dense barrier orb at the trunk, busting it open. The orb faded away, and the pair stepped in.

They found a bone-thin man sitting in a strange machine with Konan standing next to him.

Konan immediately took a defensive position.

"Stand down, Konan. Please. I want to see what these two have to say."

"But, Nagato-"

"Please, Konan."

The purple-haired woman sighed and stepped to the side.

"So, Naruto, Hoshiko. What are you here for? Do you want to kill me? Do you hate me now? For killing that girl, destroying your village, murdering your master, and ruthlessly nailing a screw into the forehead of your sensei? Although, it seems to me all you care about is your village, which is understandable, and that girl. Her death was what triggered your transformation, wasn't it? Upon finding out the first teacher to ever train you was dead, you barely blinked an eye. Kakashi, wasn't it? That copy ninja. He was all for show. Used the last of his strength to save that fat one, Choji."

Hoshiko's eyes widened. "No. Kakashi-sensei...he can't be, there's no way-"

"Oh yes," Nagato said. "He's quite dead. I made sure of that. Nailed a screw straight through his forehead. Very nice death, if I do say so myself."

Hoshiko stumbled back, and Naruto had to catch her. "No- not both of my-"

"Hoshiko."

Hoshiko turned. Naruto's voice was firm.

"We can mourn him later. For now, we must focus on the task at hand."

"R-right." Hoshiko swallowed and faced Nagato again.

Naruto glared at the thin man. "I do care, as a matter of fact. And he saved Choji because he is my sensei's comrade too. He knew...he knew he was going to leave, and decided to save Choji, who was the last living person fit enough to move."

"Could've fooled me," Nagato said. "I bet he's watching you right now wondering what went wrong in his teaching, why you would value his life that much less than some girl's."

"She's not just some girl," Hoshiko stated calmly. "And Hinata is alive and well." Her sure tone was more for Naruto and herself than Nagato, though.

Naruto lowered his head. "I don't value him any less than my comrades."

Nagato sneered. "Enough talk. It seems you haven't come up with an answer to my question. Fine. Then you shall die." He pushed a button in his giant wheelchair, and a wooden spear came shooting out of a hole in the front.

Not having enough time to block it with a barrier, Hoshiko coated herself with as thick a barrier as she could get (not very), and stepped in front of Naruto, whom the spear was aimed at.
