Coraline POV

As we walked I noticed Wybie was pocketing rocks for some odd reason. He didn't elaborate but it's not like I asked.

I soon realized what they were for as we turned to a 3 story building with no door. Seeing the almost barren wall of brick in front of me, I concurred that we were actually behind the house.

He tossed a pebble onto a window with a gray haze ingrained into the glass.
"They don't like sleeping so they should be awake."

My eyes shifted over to a tool shed that was overgrown with ivy and mossy wood.
"Greeeeaaaat an insomiac."
It's like every time I see this person they get something else wrong with them.

Wybie lit up upon seeing them finally opening the window, tossing his arms in the air.
"Y/N~ :D"

Fear overtook my features as I darted my eyes between both the window slowly opening and Wybie

No...
He wasn't going to try and catch them, was he?
I saw their legs pop out from the third story and immediately began panicking. That was way too high of a fall to jump without breaking something.

"D-DONT JUMP."

Just as I said that I saw a string of rags tied together fall before Y/N's legs hit the ground.
They jumped down like a rock climber and wrapped their arms around Wybie to hug him.

I chuckled at my own stupidity. Obviously, he's not going to fricken catch them, what was I thinking. As they broke apart I turned to look at them. Their lips were small but tugged into a faint smile; which was strange considering they always looked so done with life.

My face must have looked stranger as their smile faded completely, leaving me to question if it was ever genuine, to begin with, and walked over to me.
"If you want me to I could jump for you, Caraline."

They were acting weird, were they trying to be coy...
What the heck happened when Wybie was with them??

Wyborn called out to the both of us signaling to get moving. Y/N quipped, grabbing my hand to tug me along with where ever the heck they were going.

It was so surreal, while I was being dragged I felt like I was watching myself in 3rd person. I wasn't in my body I was just floating, following where my body was being taken.

We stopped in a clearing and I mentally sighed realizing where we were. I could see my house in the distance, beneath the ground that I was standing so high above.
'Obviously, I should have figured Wybie would tell them about the witches well.'

My hand was let go of as I saw Y/N climb a tree. I looked around but Wyborn was out of sight meaning I was left alone with them. The two of them got so close that I felt like I was third-wheeling.

I figured that both of them were getting stuff to throw down the well. It stung a little knowing that Wybie was sharing all the things we used to do together. The well was our thing, we threw the key down here, and he saved me from the other mother's right hand.  It couldn't bother me enough though so I began picking up a few things that I wanted to throw. I didn't even realize I opened the well up with my leg, it just felt like 2nd nature.

I could hear Y/N slide down the tree trunk. They walked toward me with both their hands clasped closed. Some of it was poking out from the open parts of their fingers but it was still out of view.

"What's that?"

I pried, looking at their closed hands and smelling something horrid beneath their rough fingertips.

"I choked a bird, I want to throw it down so when wakes up at the bottom of the well. It will fly back out next time we open it."

I tensed up.
They just stared at me a small soft smile creeping up their face. It was almost like they couldn't tell that they were acting like a serial killer in the making.

"Wha-What good is that going to do?"

"Well, it will help me measure how deep the well is if it does come out. Sparrows can fly for 28 miles per hour, and get tired after flying for 6 hours straight before getting tired. If the bird flies out that means the well is 168 miles deep."

I turned away after seeing them drop the unconscious bird down the well's opening. Their logic didn't make any sense. How was the bird going to fly up if the well was closed? Wouldn't the bird get crushed by the other stuff we throw down? Wouldn't the bird just die on impact when it hits the floor of the well?

"Wybie tells me you're a Michigan water witch, but you keep breaking the rules of the fae."

"What's up with you?"

They point toward the well with their thumb and I just stare blankly. Soon enough they put their hand away and chose to sit down on a dry patch of dirt curling up their knees to their chest before speaking back.

"Talking is nice, makes me feel like my thoughts aren't as invasive."

Their voice was so solemn, eyes half shut, mouth muffled from their kneecaps.
It clicked right then and there. They didn't answer my question but I wasn't focused on that. I didn't want to say anything out loud because then that means I would have been proven wrong. But I could come to terms with the fact that they just need help, someone, to talk with them. I sat next to them, putting my hands over their head. I didn't want them to suddenly attack me so I kept my movements slow. They laid their head on my shoulder and I saw their eyes open and closed slowly before I decided to lower my tone and ask them,

"How do you know about the door?"

"I saw it... in a dream"

"And are you sleepy now?"

"I am"

I brushed some of their hair out of their face and put my hands on my lap. It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulder. There was no movement, stillness- they weren't breathing? I took a deep breath not realizing I also stopped breathing.

"Take care of yourself "

I opened my eyes to try and look at their sleeping figure but when I looked down to where I thought they would be.

They weren't there
