Chapter 8

After I got ready for work I went back out to the barn to make sure everyone was doing their jobs correctly. As soon as I walked in the barn everyone was working and Rebecca was doing her job perfectly. After I did my walk through and checked on everyone it was time for me to head off to work. On my drive to work my mind drifted off to Mason and my heart sank as I could still remember the way he touched me and the fact that he almost kissed me. A tear slipped from my eye and I quickly wiped it away and continued focusing on the road.

As soon as I made it to work everyone told me goodmorning as I walked by, once I got to my office I began reading all the documents on my desk. I separated everything and put them away in the proper spot in the filing cabinet. "Knock, knock" I heard my bosses voice breaking me out of my concentration. "Good morning Mr. Jefferson" I greeted as I set the document in my hand down on the desk. "I hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend" he said as he took a seat in the chair on the opposite side of the desk. "Yes I did" I replied leaning back in my chair "Well we're glad to have you back, I just wanted to check on you and see how you're holding up right now?" he asked leaning back in his chair as well.

"Well honestly, I'm doing very well I've gotten most of the paper work sorted out, but I still have a couple more stacks to do" I said gesturing to the stacks on the opposite side of my desk. "Well keep up the good work you're a great asset to this company" he said as he got up and left my office. As I continued to organize all of the papers on my desk my mind kept traveling to Mason. I missed him a lot having him around sucked at first, but I really and truly grew to really like him. I sat back in my chair and checked my phone it was already lunch time so I ordered some food. While I waited for my food I decided to call Rebecca and check on the barn staff.

"Hey Rebecca, how is everyone doing and I want you to be honest with me because this doesn't work unless we do" I said sternly even though I know she'll tell me the truth. "Everyone is working smoothly, but the 15 people we are missing still aren't here" she responded and I just shook my head. "Alright well just keep everyone on their toes and make sure everything gets done no one leaves until that barn is taken care of" I said waiting for her response. "Yes ma'am" she replied making me smile "You're doing great love, keep up the good work" I said hanging up the phone. After I hung up the phone my food arrived and I ate my lunch in the silence of my office.

As soon as the clock hit 5 I was ready to get back home to check on the barn. Once I got home I threw on my work clothes and went out to the barn. Everything was clean and everyone was working I was very pleased with what I saw. "Great job guys, y'all can all take a break until dinner time, but I want everyone back here after dinner ready to work" I said and everyone cheered. "Thank you so much Ms. Elizabeth" everyone said as they walked out of the barn. "Hey Rebecca, have you ever ridden a horse before" I asked petting my fathers horse Red. "Yes I love horses that's why your father assigned me to the barn chores" she said with a smile as she approached Red and kissed his muzzle.

"What do you say we take a few of these babies on a trail ride?" I said patting Red's neck. "I would love to" she said a huge smile spreading across her face "Well let's go get Red and Cavalier tacked up" I said as I followed her to the tack room. We both saddled up our horses and took off down the road. After we rode Red and Cavalier we saddle up two more horses and took them out for trail rides as well. Once every horse was ridden we cleaned all of the tack and hung them back up properly. "I've never had this much fun doing barn chores" she said with a huge smile on her face. "Really? Back when I worked here we did this stuff everyday we cleaned the barn, cleaned the horses, and then took them on trail rides" I said as we walked to the entrance of the barn.

"When I was introduced to barn chores all anyone ever did was lounge around while I did all of the work" she said sadness clear in her voice. "Well with me in charge we will be doing this everyday" I said taking a sip of my water. "That's amazing, thank you so much for everything Ms. Elizabeth" she said as she grabbed her stuff from the feed room. "Well if you don't mind I'm gonna go grab a shower and get ready for dinner" she said as she took off towards the house. I decided to do the same as well and grabbed all of my stuff and trudged up to the house.
