"I made your favourite Macaroni and cheese" William said while moving the spatula in the saucepan.
Inez smiled as she placed the plates on the wooden table and sat down on the chair while swinging her leg back and forth "You are the best!" she commented.
It had been 2 days since Inez and William had arrived in the cabin. 2 days since she had left Theo. Theo hadn't contacted her since and neither did she.
Both knew that they missed each other, but their ego was bigger than the feeling.
William placed the hot saucepan on the table and started dividing their share. Inez took a bite and hummed in content.
She grinned widely as she looked back at him "It's amazing!".
No reply came from William as he kept staring at her with an unknown expression "Inez, stop it" he said as Inez frowned in confusion.
"Stop what?"
"Stop pretending that you are fine" he raised his voice a little as Inez flinched and dropped her fork on the plate, emitting a cling sound.
"Willi-"
"You know you can talk to me right?" he whispered suddenly as he grabbed her hand and looked deep into her eyes.
Inez's eyes welled up, but she refused to cry in front of anyone. She gulped back her tears as she looked at his face dusted with light freckles. William had been really sweet to her, always concerned about her and making sure she ate every meal.
"I-"
"Just look at those bags under your eyes! Do you even sleep at night?" he asked coming a little closer to her.
He was correct, she hadn't slept at all these days. Theo's voice, his hurt face and him begging her not to leave him kept haunting her. She missed him. Terribly.
"You cannot keep doing this to yourself Inez" he whispered while leaning in, his haze kept flickering from her eyes to her lips. She snapped her head to the side, refusing to look at him as anger bubbled up inside her.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO WILLIAM!" she shouted, finally losing her calm as her fingers tightened in a fist "I'm trying ok!" with that she stood up. Her eyes burning with hot tears of rage, agony and guilt.
"It hurts-" she continued as William kept looking up at her in bewilderment "-it fucking hurts!". Tears cascaded down her face as the tip of her nose became pink.
William stood up with a look of sympathy in his eyes as he grabbed her shoulders softly "It's going to be ok" he mumbled as Inez sniffled and looked down.
"I feel really guilty for leaving him and I miss him so much, it fucking hurts just make it stop!" she cried out as he wiped her tears and made her look up at him.
