She had lied to Tristan, it was her fault, but thankfully he was away. She can never put him in danger like she did the others. Had she put Sarah in danger for so many years? She had been the reason so many had attacked her, put her in danger so often by just being close to her, and then finally being the reason that she felt the need to follow her, and try to save her? This was the cost of telling the truth. Letting her in. Why did she show off how great her powers were? She wasn't good, she had never been good enough, not when it really counted. Her wolf was rising to the surface, anger at the one who had scared Sarah to take that step, anger at the world for letting this happen to someone who most certainly didn't deserver it, and anger at herself who probably did... for all the use she was. The wolf pulled her under, the sweet release of not thinking anymore. Diana had tried to get back to work but she had no focus, gone was her steady hand with hundreds of years of experience. She had a workbench full of projects she could be working on, engrossed in, She could tell the beautiful young vampire was watching her waiting to help, "Should we go back?""In time, isn't that breaking your first rule?" "But we have to do something.""You know people die all the time. Haven't you ever had someone close to you die before? Did you go back and save them?""I, well I couldn't." She looked at him wide-eyed, what had she done in the past and why did this feel different? "I didn't because it wasn't my place to save them, time was set unchangeable." She concluded, looking back to the surprisingly wise young man. "So it is possible or isn't it? Can you figure it out with that big old brain of yours or leave it to the fates?" He was almost artificially calm, considerate, and thinking things through from her perspective, the naughties must have been a special place. "Let's have a look." She led the way to her "magical" trunkel that twisted time and space about it. The was a loud crash from rooms down the house, followed by snarls and growls of pain. "Another reason to stay away and let her work it out." "Think she'll kill her boyfriend?" Paul added."What a thought." The alien considered intrinsically, what would a werewolf vs. werewolf battle be like. Would they fight more like wolves or humans? As she entered her welcoming spaceship. "So?" Paul asked, he'd been leaning around, taking in the sight of all the lights, switched, and odd buttons of the spaceship he shouldn't touch for a while. The place never lost its mystery, he would always be in awe until he understood how every little bit worked. The cute alien caught his eyes, with her horn-rimmed ones. "We can't." "And that's it?""It's our history, we can't do anything at all for the poor girls.""Well that sucks, if we had a body I could have at least tried to make her a vampire." He hissed at her, mimicking his worst rolling out of bed thirsty days. "My daughter would probably try to decapitate you if she'd heard that suggestion!" She swatted at him lightly, he was happy that he'd made her smile at least. "Don't give her any ideas, you're diabolical. And I'm pretty attached to my head. Thanks." "You've got nothing to worry about, I like it where it is too. Back to work then?" "Yessirr, was it the particle physics thingamajig?"Alexa watched on as Sarah ran towards her over the hilly meadow, laughing, smiling, before turning pale and still, big blue lifeless eyes staring at her. Alexa shot awake and let out a small cry, remembering what had happened, she had murdered her best friend! Paul appeared in her doorway in the blink of an eye "Alexa what happened?""I killed her.""You've killed a lot, can you be more specific.""I killed Sarah. She's dead because of me.""So are a hell of a lot of vampires.""Is that supposed to make me feel better?""No, it's just weird hearing remorse from a genocidal maniac.""Don't put her in the same-" the vampire interrupted her emerging yellow-eyed fury, "Here's some soup!" He squeaked out leaving as fast as he had entered, the only trace of him a bowl of steaming carrot and coriander soup, from a can. Alexa took the soup into her clawed hands and looked at it from side to side, like an animal sizing up its prey, she took a long sniff and grimaced. Her stomach audibly protested, so she lapped up the goop. Sat on her torn-up bed and transformed into a full wolf. The soft sand felt warm on the pads of her paws. She was running free, as a wolf Tristan was there too. She stopped to lap up some pond water and he nudged her not to. Then splashed her, the water filling her entire field of vision. Then Sarah was in his place smiling an empty smile. Alexa woke up suddenly, her hands catching her scream, tears escaping her eyes, she wept for hours, as if she could feel only one emotion from now on. Regret. "Has Tristan been back?" Paul asked the pouting alien as he played with the dull ready meal on his plate. "No. I do wonder where he went, but I am also sort of glad he's gone." Diana played with her own plate of sludge. Vastly missing her daughter's cooking, "Was he not good enough for your little girl?" The vampire pushed away his plate done with keeping up the pretence he couldn't live on just blood. He inhaled the rest of his mug of warm blood, savouring its way better taste through a fanged smile. She looked at him blankly, "He was far too old for her." That caught his attention, what had age go to do with anything? "How old was he?""200 or so.""Hmmm, well is age really something to keep immortals apart?""She's 16.""And has had to grow up too fast, she'd literally eat any kid her age alive. Besides what's is ever the age gap between us?" He placed his hand over hers, trying to entice a spark, any reaction. "One thousand years, and you are just proving my point." She swatted his hand away."No, I'll warm you up to the idea. Tristan is good for her, and I'm good for you. For your fifteen hundredth birthday, we should go to the beginning of the universe?" He rattled off excitedly, red eyes glowing faintly in innocent thrill. His excitement did get to her, but not totally as he had wanted. "No, but we can go there for yours. I'd rather Ectalar it's a sulphur-based planet the next galaxy over.""Wait another galaxy?" His eyes went as wide as they could possibly go, red glowing sparkling, he watched her as she couldn't keep a small smile from forming. "Shall I let you imagine it first, I'm going to take her your wasted food."His arrogance returned. "Thanks, doll." He smirked. She noted and called from the hallway, "Only little boys play with dolls." She turned her head back as the thought fully formed in her head. "You do know I do appreciate you not attacking her in her defenceless state.""I know." He was getting to the girl, melting her ice heart, just a little. The dreams and blackouts were only getting worse Alexa noted. Her wolf was coming to the surface whenever she dwelled on Sarah, her regret, pain, and anger, that the wolf took it away. Until she woke up, having seen her again. It was scary, she was only half aware that time was passing, and her odd house guests sometimes brought food. She didn't think they were moving around her already torn pieces of furniture, it must be her wolf. Her rational mind was finally winning, Sarah was dead there was nothing she could do now, but as she placed her hand on the doorknob to exit she could hear the soft voice call "Alex."And she'd wake up in another place in the room in a ball, something else destroyed. Here wolf part was trying to protect her, and release the anger she had towards herself. But was she still. Time had no meaning, her clock had kept skipping for a while until she woke up to find it broken. Sarah looked down at it, down at her. Red, blood, black. Another place. She had died, she hadn't saved Sarah or herself, and now she was being punished in hell. This wasn't her room, there wasn't a home for her, with the living anymore. Her own personal hell, where time doesn't pass, and Sarah will always be there to remind her of her betrayal and her failure, over and over again. Sarah was next to her smiling her warm innocent smile, with dead blue eyes. But the food, what didn't make sense was the food, it was bad and probably part of the torture but every now and then there was a new flavour. "Alex canned food." Sarah's dead eyes bore into hers as she ate the now cold baked beans provided. She woke up the bowl was on her head, and bean juice was in her hair. Sarah was there again, unwavering eyes staring at the bowl. She was at the other end of the bed. The door was opening Diana sat on the end of her bed, placing a ready meal down between them for her to eat, but before Alexa could crawl over to it Sarah was looking at it "Alex I wouldn't." She had to block her out and focus, focus on staying human. But the wolf was always there, just under the surface. How can you escape hell? There must be a way to peace, she would take sweet oblivion over this endless cycle. The door. The door opened for a minuscule moment as Paul brought another open can and spoon. But the moment was all she needed and she took it launching herself past him, fast enough to not see Sarah, she was free! This was her home, she ran to the kitchen with all her supernatural might. "Alex, can we have the party next week?" Sarah's voice was behind her."Aieeee!" The she-wolf let out a deafeningly high-pitched scream. "Sarah?" Alexa must have been hearing things, she heard that in Paul's voice. Vampire, blood, black? "Since when did you start haunting the kitchen?""Haunting?" That was still Sarah's voice, but no scent, only sound."You dead." He tried to helpfully point out, as his footsteps moved forward, towards the semi-conscious werewolf. He grabbed, her turning her and shook her lightly. Sarah was just beside them, "Alexa, I think you've got to get it together. It's bad when you look worse than a ghost.""Ghost?""Sarah.""You see her too?""What do you mean, of course, I do she's been fazing through here for months." "She's, I'm?""In need of a bath and a party." Sarah chimed in, smile blazing, eyes undilating. Diana appeared, "Alexa honey you're up." And ran to hug her, arms circling the tall dark teenager with hair stuck up and matted, with scratches all over her body, with nothing that really resembled clothes anymore. She took her into a tiny great big bear hug. "Sit sit we must celebrate." She pulled her down to a chair."With a party." Sarah chimed."No party." Alexa the human mess proclaimed."Of course no party.""Ah," It hadn't crossed the Paul's mind, him knowing something the self-proclaimed smartest being on the planet didn't. "Diana, we have a guest that you can't see." He started to explain, catching all three girls' attention. "And she's probably spent too much time with Alexa recently. Sarah is haunting us as a ghost.""No ghosts are that weird old guy in the attic smoking the pipe endlessly.""What old guy?""Diana I hate to break it to you but, you can't see the ghosts.""Alexa honey, didn't I tell you this place was haunted!""And there's a bloke smoking in the attic too."
