The chunky heels of her lace up cherry docs fell heavy on the linoleum of the train's floor. She raised her chin and straightened her posture - she may have been the new student but she wanted to exude confidence, friendly confidence. She liked to think that she would be fine by herself at the school but the truth was she wanted friends, needed them, yet as she looked to her right and left every compartment was full. She refused to lose hope, there had to be at least one compartment that wasn't full, she couldn't just sit on the floor of the Hogwarts Express. Just as her hope was wavering, she heaved open the door to the final carriage and sure enough, the final compartment was occupied by only two boys. Y/N's hand was raised, posed to knock on the door when she heard laughter and conversation from behind her. She turned to see a marginally plump girl with chubby cheeks, blonde ringlets and rosy lips walking down the corridor trailing behind a few of her friends. Sam.
Y/N quickly pushed open the sliding door and ducked into the compartment, shutting it behind her. She loved her family friend, yet Sam tended to be... Clingy, and the whole point of this was so that Y/N could meet new people! It was fine, she reassured herself, she would talk to her later. Realisation dawned. Oh shit. Y/N turned on her heel to face the two boys she had just interrupted by slamming herself into their compartment.
She smiled, 'Very sorry about that.'
The boys just looked at her, one unimpressed and the other in pure shock. They were both rather tall, one had light chocolate hair, eyes a similar colour, soft features, fine scars dotted along his face and an open book laid across his lap giving him an air of academicity. The other boy was pale with unruly black hair that stuck out at all angles other than down, hazel eyes and round gold-framed spectacles.
'Can I sit?'
'Uh-uhm yeah, sure.' the book boy looked over at his friend.
Y/N took a seat across from them, 'So I was going to knock but then I saw someone I didn't want to talk to so I kinda, you know... Barged in.'
'That's fine. I'm Remus, Remus Lupin, by the way.' the boy shut his book.
She smiled warmly, 'Lovely to meet you, I'm Y/N. Y/L/N.' She turned to the other boy, 'And you are?'
'James Potter.' he shook her hand.
'Charmed.'
James crossed his arms and looked her up and down, 'You new?'
She nodded.
'So where did you transfer from?'
She lifted a glass of chilled water to her lips, 'Azkaban.'
Even Remus laughed this time.
She shook her head, 'Obviously not, I'm not from here.' she continued, 'I lived... Elsewhere, but my parents had work here so I moved and Professor Dumbledore accepte-'
The compartment door banged open, a boy stood in the doorway, head thrown back with laughter where presumably someone had said something humorous. He turned back and gave a loud, 'James!'
His friend stood up and gave him a clap on the back, 'Sirius! Long time, no see?'
The boy rolled his eyes, 'I saw you over the break, stop being dramatic. I haven't seen you though, Remus.'
Remus smiled, 'Hi Sirius.'
The boy's eyes fell on her as he lent against the door frame. His gaze flittered over her as she took him in. He was tall and athletic with black hair that framed his face and fell just below his ears, slightly wavy. He had grey eyes that sparkled with intelligence and amusement, a jawline sharp enough to slice diamond and high cheekbones, and my word, Y/N thought, he was gorgeous.
